Challenges faced by IBM due to IoT
Introduction
Background:
IBM or the International Business Machine Corporation is based in the United States of
America. It is a multinational company headquartered at New York. It is operated in 170
countries around the world. One of the main aims of the company is to proceed with the world.
IBM believes that with the application of science, intelligence and reasoning, one can improve
the condition of the business, society and condition of the human. The company believes in
developing new systems and technologies. One of the most recent technologies in the use is the
Internet of things. Hence, with the emergence of the IoT, the developers back in the IBM
Corporation have taken initiatives to incorporate the technology in the system such that the
business can be enhanced. However in doing so it has faced some uncertainties as well.
Research Questions:
What is IoT and how is it beneficial for the business?
How can the IoT be incorporated in the business?
What are the challenges faced by the IBM Corporation due to IoT?
Literature Review
Concept of IoT:
As stated by Wortmann & Flüchter (2015), IoT or the Internet of things is considered to
be one of the most recent technologies in use by different sectors of the business. The technology
comprises of several other integrated systems and computing devices with Unique Identifiers
capable of transferring information to the other networks without human to human or computer

to computer interactions. The Internet of things is technology consisting of the other high level
technologies like the machine learning, AI, embedded systems, real-tie analytics and many more
which are extremely beneficial on its own. However, with the technology in use all together,
provides additional benefits to the system as well. According to Janiesch et al., (2017) IoT comes
with uncountable benefits for the business. The most significant benefits of the IoT in the
business include, reduction of the cost of operating in the business, assistance in understanding
the human behavior, helps in maximizing productivity by improving the efficiency of the
business, service enhancement for the support of the customers, and improving the safety of the
work place.
Cons of IoT:
According to Ouaddah et al. (2017) the main disadvantages of the internet of things are
the issues of the privacy. The customer data that is present over the internet can be accessed by
the different companies for the improvement of the customer support in the organization. This
may lead to the breach in the privacy of the data.
This was supported by Machado & Shah (2016), who along with this said that over
reliance of the technology has occurred due to the emergence of the internet of things in the
sector of the business, which has otherwise affected the supply chain process. The automated
process that is used by the IoT has caused a huge reduction in the employment. The jobs which
required assistance of the people, like managing warehouses in the supply chain and handling the
data of the customers are all automated with the use of the IoT. This may be beneficial for the
organization, but is definitely not beneficial for the employees.

4INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
IBM and IoT:
IBM, who believes in the progress of the organization with the help of the technological
development, has made use of the IoT for this purpose. Özyılmaz & Yurdakul (2017) researched
that the use of IoT has helped in the improvement of the business in IoT. However, they found
out that the company is facing certain issues with the technology as well, for which this research
will be conducted. The purpose of the research is identify the challenges faced by the IBM
Corporation with the implementation of the IoT and suggest suitable recommendation for the
issues.
Methodology:
For the purpose of the research work, we will consider the Qualitative approach with the
help of the secondary sources of the information. The Qualitative approach is the non-numerical
way of analyzing the information that is assembled with the help of the secondary sources of
information. The secondary sources of the information are the information which are gathered
from the articles and journals written by the researchers or are available online. In order to
maintain the authenticity of the information we will make use of scholarly articles for the
research.
