1GENDER STEREOTYPES
The purpose of this paper is to analyse how gender stereotyping and gender roles affect
individuals in a specific society. Gender roles are a phenomena in which individuals are expected
to behave in a certain ways based on their gender (Chalabaev et al., 2013). For example; women
are expected to be polite and caring, whereas men are expected to be bold and aggressive. This
paper attempts to dismantle the long practice of gender stereotyping in which an unequal
distribution of power exists among individuals based on their gender/sex.
I have been a witness of how this gender stereotyping takes place within a given society
from the initial stage of life and how gender roles are imbibed within the minds and life of young
individuals from their school life. This stereotyping keeps growing within an individual and it is
stretched up to their work life. This process of gender stereotyping can be dismantled within the
American society as a whole by pointing out certain circumstances where this kind of
stereotyping is being practiced and also my appreciating people based on their merit and not
considering their gender. The PBS map as discussed in the Two Spirits explains how there are
people who are born in this world with a mixture of both genders and how this phenomenon is
completely a natural process and not an abnormality. Gender pluralism refers to the presence of
more than the two widely known gender of the world (Liser, 2012) and it is greatly accepted in
many tribes and cultures of this world and therefore people belonging to a different gender
should be considered equal to the conventional genders of male and female. The PBS maps is
surprising because it shows gender pluralism is significantly present throughout the world. This
PBS map should be accessible to all members of a given society in order to understand that every
individual is unique in their own way and assigning roles based on their gender only prove as a
hindrance to their productivity.

The paper concludes on a note that gender inequality is a common practice throughout
the world and how the process of gender stereotyping only proves to be an obstacle in the
development of a society.
