create an analyses of his contribution to the world of fine arts and cinema through his genre of
comic expression,the necessary elements that shaped his life and the way he responded to it and
achieved his goal. The essay will also try to understand the impact that he had left with his work

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on 16th April, 1889 and was an English comic actor, who
delivered excellent expression on screen and is regarded as the greatest entertainer of all times.
Charles Spencer Chaplin had been an actor, but was not restricted to acting only. He was a music
composer, a director and a producer at the same time. He believed that his creativity would be
curtailed if he could not produce his own films. He had brought about a revolution in the era of
silent films, which brought him to limelight at a very early age (McCabe 1978).
Chaplin had experienced a rough childhood with the early death of his father and subsequently
his mother in later years. Both of his parents had been impressive actors and versatile vocalists.
Chaplin had a severe adversity during his childhood years and which probably shaped the story
of Chaplin’s life in a more intriguing way. Chaplin spent his early childhood in London and he
was separated from his mother owing to her financial condition and Chaplin was sent to Central
London District School for Paupers. He lost his mother in 1928 and had already started his
career as an actor in a production of Sherlock Holmes. In 1910 he travelled to the United States
with the Fred Karno Repertoire Company. He made his debut as a member of a Yong troupe

known as the “The Eight Lancashire Lads” and gained popularity as an excellent tap dancer.
Chaplin lost in father two years later to his mother’s death in 1930, by the time he had fully
involved himself in acting.
Chaplin has been one of the greatest comedians the world has ever seen and he gained huge
popularity with his stunts and slapstick performance. His popularity increased with time yet he
was surrounded with controversies regarding is marriage and family. Chaplin had three wives,
namely Lita Grey, Paulette Goddard and Oona O’Neill and had a controversies relating to his
personal life. Apart from this he was greatly accepted by the society for his satire and comedy.
His popularity soared to an extent where he became a global phenomenon by 1916. According
to Andrew Sarris a film critique, “Chaplin was arguably the single most important artist
produced by Cinema, certainly its most extraordinary performer and still its most universal
icon”. The British Film Institute describes him as a “towering figure in world culture”. The
Time magazine listed Chaplin on the list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century,
due to the comic relief and laughter he brought to millions and transformed an industry into an
art (Haining 1982).
The irony of Charles Chaplin had been his ruthless childhood which had been spent in
adversity, yet he chose to make people laugh, one of the greatest virtues of comic art form.
Chaplin had always wanted to bring smiles to lives and transform the silent era period of movies
from an industry to art (Charlie Chaplin: Official Site). The way Chaplin has represented his art
in expressive form with similarity to mime and slapstick performance; he has reflected the
harshness of life and role of fate or destiny in our lives. He has tried to express the deep
sentimentality and pathos in form of comedy and his work were intended to derive comedy out
of tragedy. As Chaplin describes that his comic outcome from tragic occurrences are only to defy

the forces of nature that offer tragedy to us and our beyond our control, thus laughing out is h
best way to handle the tragic sentimentality. He states that it is paradoxical to ridicule tragedy,
but it is this humor that provides the relief from tragedy.
The World without Chaplin and his work would be less humorous and dull and
monotonous. His contribution to film making and creative performance cannot be measured;
rather he is considered a pioneer in the world of film making and performing arts. The impact
that he created in the society made him immensely popular the way he represented comedy and
presented it in a manner that was eloquent and lucid like never before paved the way for genre of
comic expression. Chaplin will also be known for his struggles and hardships and can be counted
as one of the most inspiring stories of success in the 20th century.
