1COMPARISON OF THE CHARACTER OF JESUS IN GOSPELS
Jesus Christ was undoubtedly was one of the most influential figures in the history of
the world itself. He was a first century Jewish preacher as well as a religious leader, who has
been established to be the central figure of Christianity itself. Thus, it can be stated that the
Christians indeed consider Jesus Christ to be their religious leader. The character of Jesus has
been described in the gospels written by each of his disciples. There are some differences in
the life and the character of Christ in each of these Gospels itself. This is what the essay will
talk about.
The purpose of this essay to compare the character of Jesus in the Gospel of
Mark with the childhood gospel of Matthew and Luke.
In order to make the comparisons of the character of Jesus in accordance with the
Gospels of Mark with that of Matthew and Luke, it is first important for the readers to get to
know about the character of Jesus Christ and what had been said about the character of Christ
in each of the Gospels that are available for the readers themselves. In the first case, the
character of Jesus Christ had been well described in the Gospels written by ark, who was
considered to be one of the followers of Christ himself. In the Gospel of Mark, the character
of Christ had been described in detail for the benefit of the understanding of the readers
themselves (Johnson: 161).
The Gospel written by Mark tells the character of Jesus Christ which have been
presented to the readers from the perspective of the disciple Mark. The first thing about the
character of Christy which they get to know from the Gospel itself is the fact that Jesus never
indulged in self-promotion. He only preached whatever he was asked to preach by God
himself as well as John the Baptist who had baptised him (Strelan: 2016). Other evidences of
the character of Jesus Christ that the readers could get from the Gospel of Mark is that Jesus
was fully obedient to that of the Holy Spirt itself. This is evidenced by the fact that Jesus

never for once went against the wishes of the Holy Spirit itself and he performed the duties
exactly in the way that the Holy Spirit had asked him to. The Gospel also tells the readers
about the leadership qualities of Christ himself, as thousands of people would gather from all
over the region itself to listen to Jesus Christ preaching the messages of God to the people
themselves. Finally the book tells the readers also about his charismatic personality and his
forgiving nature as he taught the spirit of brotherhood among the individuals themselves. The
Gospel also signifies Jesus as the perfect servant as the Gospel was written for the Romans
and Mark’s view of Jesus was that of a servant who had come to fulfil the wishes of his
heavenly father and give his life to prevent the sins of men. Jesus is also known to speak very
little in this Gospel and performed his actions more based on the belief that Romans preferred
action over speech (Bock et all: 2017).
When the character of Jesus Christ according to the Gospel of Matthew is analysed by
the readers, it is seen that the character of Jesus has been compared to that of a lion,
signifying him to be the King. The Gospel was written by a Jew for the Jews and the lineage
of Jesus had been traced to that of Abraham in this Gospel. Matthew also characterised Jesus
as being gentle, loving as well as forgiving (Strelan:2016). Another characteristic of Jesus
which comes out to the readers from the Gospel of Matthew is of his demanding and straight-
forward nature. He was never afraid to openly criticize those activities of the people which he
did not feel to be right and he was never afraid to speak his mind. All these characteristics of
Jesus are revealed to the readers from the Gospel of Matthew.
The Gospel of Luke also tells the readers about the characteristics of Jesus Christ. In
this case, the Gospel was written by a Greek for all the Greeks and the Gospel focused on the
humanitarian nature of Jesus Christ. The Gospels tells the readers that Jesus had a tender
heart and he loved all humans, which in turn he taught his followers to love. The Gospels also
tells the readers about Jesus’ love for all the children (Carson:2016). Apart from this, he was

close to nature enjoyed the company of others as well was always ready to help anybody in
need. In general, Luke speaks about all the human qualities that Jesus had in himself.
Basically, the Gospel of Luke informs the readers about the human and loving nature of Jesus
Christ himself.
If the character of Jesus Christ is to be analysed from the perspectives of these
Gospels, it can be said that each of these Gospels tells the readers about some characteristic
which was not available to them, in the other Gospels. This is evidenced in the sense that
Mark saw Jesus as someone who spoke less and preached more through his actions, Matthew
focusing on the demanding and the brutal straight forward nature of Christ and Luke also
emphasizing on the humanitarian nature of Christ, speaking about his kindness and love for
all humans (Bock et.all:2017).
Thus, from the above discussions, it can be concluded that Jesus Christ was indeed
one of the greatest religious leaders of all times. It was his love ad humility which made his
followers love him and respect him. The Gospels written by the disciples of Christ himself
indeed throws light on the nature and the characteristics which Jesus himself had in himself.
Thus, the essay can be concluded with the following statements that Jesus Christ indeed
loved his disciples and humanity in general and his teachings play an important role in the
life of the Christians all over the world itself.
