Knowledge questions
1. The first thing that I need to remember while working with an employee who possess
hearing disability is too act politely and restrict from demonstrating rudeness or
discriminatory activities. While working with people who possess disability, it is crucial
to ask them how to make their work life more effective as well as safer form them. Hence
first of all, as a mentor, I will ask my mentee how he or she will refer to communicate.
Secondly, I will make sure to get my mentee’s attention before communicating with him.
This will ensure that the information that I want him to know is reaching to him clearly. I
will make eye contact and communicate slowly and clearly with him. However, I will
make sure that my voice is not raised above a certain limit neither is exaggerated.
2. As a team leader I will propose the following policies that can be included in order to
ensure an effective diverse workplace.
There must be strict penalties for individuals for demonstrating any kinds of
discrimination against any employees on the bai of their race, gender, sexual
orientation, age and colour. Any employees of the organizations found guilty of
such discrimination act will be highly penalized and even may be terminated on
the bass of Zero tolerance policy depending on the severity of his or her act.
All the employees should be provided with diversity training and education in
order to reduce diversity related conflicts in the organization. Employees will be
made aware of the importance and benefits of diversity in an organization. Not
only this, effective ice breaking sessions should be introduced within the
organization so that the communication between the employee can be increased.

3. The most mention worthy things that I will be missing in case of getting transported to a
place that has completely different culture and tradition compared to my place is my the
presence of my family, food, religious beliefs and traditions. At that point of time, I will
expect cultural competence, active cooperation, friendly behaviour and kind gesture from
the community of that specific country. While active cooperation and cultural
competence from them will help me to adapt to that specific culture, friendly behaviour
and kind gestures will help be to develop affection for the people with whom I am living
and thus eventually I will be able to develop respect and fondness for their cultural,
values and tradition as well. In order to ensure that all my colleagues and clients from
different cultural backgrounds feel safe and secure in the workplace, I will definitely try
to demonstrate cultural competence, friendly behaviour and kind gesture as a dental
assistant.
4. In order to work efficiently in an organization, it is highly crucial to behave appropriately
with clients and colleagues so that any conflicts or consumer attrition does not take place.
For this, I will suggest the following six qualities that the mentioned employee should
develop in order to gain success.
i. Self assessment: He needs to develop the skill of assessing his own
behaviour towards women and understand whether it is clashing with ideal
ways of treating a human being
ii. Learning: he should develop the skill of learning about the culture in
Australia and how women are treated here. On the basis of this, he should
modify her nature.

iii. Interact: He should interact with people in order to understand there
perspective.
iv. Communicate culturally: He should learn the skill of communicating in a
cultural way.
v. Listen: He should develop the skill of listening. Deep listening focuses on
understanding the other person’s perspective rather than listening for an
opportunity to defend oneself.
vi. Developing respect for women: In order to avoid conflict in both
professional and personal life he needs to develop respect for women.
5. The positive effects that is expected from the paring of me and the new employee who I
will be training include effective cultural competence, developing respect for women and
interpersonal skills. For mentoring purpose, first of all, I would communicate with my
mentee and ask him to provide me a brief about his perspective about women. Secondly,
I will explain him about the importance of adopting the culture of his workplace and how
women are supposed to be treated in our culture. I will also make him aware of the
adverse consequences that he might face if he lacks cultural competence. In order to
ensure that he has gained enough awareness, I will monitor him on a regular basis.
6. It is highly crucial for the practice manager to enhance the cultural competence amongst
employees within the dental healthcare organization. From a business, legal, and ethical
perspective, he should conduct and education based training where it will be clearly
mentioned that every employee has the right to celebrate their cultural traditions. Instead
of providing Allira with a leave of one week, the practice manager can request her as well
a other employees to celebrate the sorry day within the workplace. This would not only

allow celebrating the day but will also enhance cultural competency within the
organization.
7. The term marginalization when associated with community is believed to be the process
of pushing specific group of individual to the edge of the society by restricting them from
raising an active voice, identity or pace in it. Through both direct and indirect processes,
marginalized group of individuals are relegated to a secondary position as well as made
to feel that they are less crucial than the other communities that hold more power as well
as privilege in the society. In Australia the aboriginal and Torres islanders are found to be
experiencing marginalized behaviour despite a good number of rules an regulation
implemented by both the local as well as federal government. As per my opinion, the
following help are needed to be provided to the marginalized people.
Seeking out voice as well as perspectives to the marginalized individuals
Confronting racist act and modifying the same
Using our privileges for supporting the marginalised movement
Investing time and money
Avoiding segregation
Performing the work to be inclusive (Harris 2017)
Developing proactiveness about inclusion in our day to day life.
8. Some of the major resources that are available in our dental healthcare organization for
employees with hearing disabilities are as follows;
Closed captioning
CART or real-time captioning
Australian Sign Language (ASL) interpreter

Text phones or video relay services
Written memos and company communications
Visual emergency notifications
Changes in workspace arrangements
Being a dental assistant, he has the role of communicating with the clients, assist them in
case of any requirements and others. In order to provide him with any emergency notification,
visual emergency notifications are used. In order to ensure that employees are aware of those
needs, both persona as well as professional communication is encouraged amongst employees.
Ice breaking sessions are encouraged where employees are encouraged to establish effective
communication with each others. This process will ensure that each of the employees are well
aware of each other’s weaknesses.
9. Australia can be considered as one of the most culturally as well as linguistically diverse
(CALD) populations across the world. According to researchers, approximately 40 percent of the
Australian population is made up of immigrants as well as their children and approximately 15
speak in languages that are other than the English language at home (Betancourt et al. 2016). In
the last two decades, it has been found that the number of employees as well as clients who are
from culturally as well as linguistically diverse background have got increased dramatically in
community as well as in several service organization. Thus it has become highly crucial for the
staffs in that organization to understand the cultural factors that impose impact on their work
relationship as well as practices along with delivering culturally appropriate services. In recent
years, both the local as well as federal government is providing education as well as information
for local schools and workplaces and encouraging them to work in partnership with aboriginal
members of the community.
