Question 1:
Diversity is defined as people from diverse backgrounds, race, religion, sex, or
nationalities come together to form a group, an organization or community where the differences
in the people are valued (Nielsen and Nielsen 2013). I view diversity as a good thing since it
allows me to experience different things outside of what I am normally accustomed to. I have a
cultural perspective that identifies the existence of diversity in the world. I have been taught to
respect the culture of every other people and relate with them. However, the perspectives that I
own, is not completely free of biases. For example, the way I was grown, made me feel that my
culture is superior and the best of all.
The two fundamental limitations to my social and self awareness are information and
illusions. Information from others sometimes contain lies that limits my social awareness and
Illusions result in misinterpretation of diverse perception and various other aspects which are
related to others (Kivran-Swaine et al. 2014). I plan to improve self and social awareness of mine
through identification of circumstances that make me feel uncomfortable and change my reaction
for the better results. I have also planned to focus on behaviors which might prompt me to give
pessimistic feedback and then modify this behavior. Most importantly, I will avoid relying on
information from others and illusions and apologize after making insensitive errors.
Question 2:
Anu, the 50 year old Indian woman, who has been residing in Australia for the past 15
years has been unable to accept the diversity of the Australian culture and is restricting herself
within her culture and even her friend circle consists of only Indians. This shows that she has no

communication with the other people of diverse originality and is thus unable to gain diverse and
wide perspective of the concept of diversity. I believe she needs communication with diverse
people, and she also needs the other people to respect and have tolerance for her culture. She
needs her nationality to be acknowledged and she wants to be accepted by the way she is; this is
why she feels more comfortable with friends from same nationality.
As for the scenario of Susan is a 20 year old Chinese woman with no issues of accepting
diversity. She is very quick in adjusting with the Australian culture. It is also mentioned that she
only partially recognizes herself with her own culture. Susan needs a diverse team in her
workplace where the team members will recognize her as an individual and not someone who is
representing any kind of stereotype. Susan is also in dire need of communication;
communication with the team members might help her to gain some new friends.
Nelson is a worker of Indigenous origin who felt challenged and anxious when he had to
face interviews. It might be possible that Nelson felt attacked initially when he was questioned
and got aware of his background and the kind of discrimination the Indigenous had to face. All
these factors made him nervous and thus he found it difficult to answer any of the questions that
were asked by the interviewer. Only when the interviewer turned the interview into an active and
relaxed conversation exchange, Nelson was able to demonstrate his abilities. This shows that
Nelson needed communication that demonstrated respect and positive regard for his abilities
regardless of his background and originality.
