2. Why is it important to allow children in decision making from a young age?
Decision making plays a very important role in the development of every child because it
offers them enough opportunity to examine their skills in their daily activities and also helps
in exploring the impact of their decision on their daily activity. It also provides them an
opportunity to find out which decision matches to which situation through their try and
error approaches which will provide them little bit glimpse about real world.

3. List 3 symptoms or signs of abuse or neglect.
There are many symptoms or sign which are important than physical signs. One of the
symptoms is that child suddenly starts displaying completely different behavioural from
their regular behaviour like anger, sad, unusual fears. Another important symptom is that
child starts withdrawing from his/her friends and prefers to sit alone. Another important
symptom is that they start attempting to run away and many times result in self-harm.
These symptoms somewhere indicates towards abuse signs.
4. When writing a report what should you include?
While gathering and recording information in a report, it is important that the data is
accurately collected and recorded because poorly recorded information create misleading
perceptions. The report must be clear since it assist the readers in understanding the
message. The information must be objective which means it being fair and show
appropriate balance. It must avoid biases and prepared in a professional manner. The facts
about the behaviour of the child along with data and time when the data is collected should
be included in the report. The report should include risk-of-harm indicators along with
circumstances surrounding that risk-of-harm. The report should be written in non-
judgemental form and it should avoid excessive use of pronouns such as he, she or it. It
should also avoid words such as possibly or probably. Irrelevant information should not be
included in the report neither family history (unless relevant). Report format also plays very
important role in creating impression, first thing which must be included in the report must
be incident details which consists of date of incident, time, name of the victim and name of
volunteer. Then it must include the type of abuse happened in particular case like physical,
sexual, serious neglect offence. Then it must include the detail description of incident from
parents/care taker. Then it must include information whether the incident has been report
before or not and in last it must include a disclaimer related to child standards.
5. What should you do if a child discloses abuse they have experienced to you?
What are your legal responsibilities?
A child can directly disclose abuse to me and in such case I have the opportunity to provide
immediate support and comfort to the child in order to assist in protecting the child from
further abuse. The process of disclose information about abuse can be traumatic for the
child; therefore, it is my duty to be sensitive and empathetic to their needs with not only my
words but my body language as well. Firstly, I should access organisation’s internal policy
and become knowledgeable about appropriate respond. Being alert about warning signs
and observing the child’s behaviour. Having gentle non-judgemental discussions with the
child and expressing concerns. Reporting to the Department of Communities, Child Safety
and Disability Services or state police service.
I am not a mandatory reporter in Queensland as section 13E of the Child Protection Act
1999 provides that mandatory reports include police officers, doctors, teachers, registered
nurses and a person performing advocate function under the Public Guardian Act 2014.
Mandatory reporting referred to the legislative requirement for selected people who are
responsible for reporting cases of child abuse and neglect to government authorities.

information that will assist you?

In case a person did not know how to respond to disclose of child abuse, the assistance of
childcare professionals should be taken to protect the child from further abuse. Regardless
of the source of harm, it is important to familiar with and follows childcare services policies
and procedures. Policies and procedures given by the Child Protection Act 1999 should be
assessed in order to find relevant information which will assist in addressing this issue in an
appropriate manner. The organisations are responsible for supplying updated information
about changes, amendments and new legislation to employees regarding child abuse
policies. This information can be collected by contacting quality and standards team,
consulting with managers, contacting relevant community services department or utilising
the internet to access up-to-date information. Australian government has taken this issue
very seriously and hence they are providing detailed information in their website section
under information on safety and well fare under Colum in AIFS. In addition a help line is also
provided which will provide all the information associated with child abuse issue2.
7. Benji has been attending the centre for a year. You notice that this week Benji has been sent
with an empty lunch box and seems withdrawn. As you are friends with Benji’s mum you
know he has been staying with his uncle as there has been a family emergency. You know
how stressed mum is and don’t want to bother her with this. What should you do?
In order to help Benji and the parent, it is important to investigation in this matter to find
out whether the uncle of Benji is abusing him or not. There is a conflict of interest in the
situation because I know the parent of the child on a personal level. Conflict of interest has
occurred because I know Benji’s mum on a personal level which might unfairly influence my
decisions. Therefore, I will report this incident to a higher authority that has the power to
investigate in this matter. I will give food to Benji since it is important that he receives
appropriate nutrition which is required for his development. It will also help me to build
trust in our relationship. While talking with Benji, I will document the incident in a report
and provide information on support services to help Benji and his mum.
8. In your own words define what Trauma informed care is.
Trauma-informed care is referred to the understanding of how trauma can influence a
child’s behaviour and outcomes. For example, there are different situations which can be
traumatic for children such as physical or sexual abuse, neglect, bullying, witnessing
domestic violence, abandonment, death or loss of loved one and others. Trauma resulted in
loss self-esteem of children, difficulty in sleep, memory recall, anxiety and other reactions.
An educator can work with children to understand their problems and help them in
overcome the trauma.
9. Explain what child focused work practises mean to you and your job role in the childcare
industry.
For me, child focused work practice is based on two vital parts. The first part is the belief
that every child has the right to a safe passage through childhood and they should grow in
an environment which is free from harmful activities. The second part is the child’s needs
and welfare which should be the primary concern and focus of practice and examination.

My role is to comply with work practices that support protection of children such as
compliance with regulations, maintaining confidentiality, providing appropriate response to
their protection and employing child-focused work practices.
10. What are the steps you need to take when submitting a notification of harm to the
correct authorities?
First step will be collecting all information related to the incident, then prepare a report
which will include name of victim, abuser, incident place and timing along with date. Then
approach a registered childcare agency and create a strategic partnership in this incident
which will provide weight to this case along with registered case number.
11. What information should be included in a report when submitting a notification of harm?
Information that is collected and recorded in the report includes details regarding the
incident as discussed or observed by the child. Information about what the child say, who
did he/she saw, heard and when. The report should not include phrases such as “child
appeared angry” without writing information about facial expression, body language, works
or behaviour of the child. Data and time when the child disclosed the information should be
included along with the child’s personal details, parent’s contact details, date of birth and
others. Indicators of harm should be included in the report along with explanations of child
for their injuries. Only objective facts should be included in the report rather than own
interpretations or views. In addition it must also include the reason for which the child is
pointing out at particular person along with the possible risk that can happen to the child
after reporting both mentally as well as physically. It must also include what the child has
experience related to the particular incident.
12. What is one requirement you must adhere to set by police and state before beginning a
career in childcare?
In Queensland, one requirement which the person must adhere to set by police and state
before starting a career in childcare sector is getting a Blue Card if they meet a specific
criteria of working hours which include working for eight consecutive days, once a week,
each week or four weeks, once a fortnight, each fortnight or over eight weeks, or once a
month, each month or over six months. The Blue Card system works as a prevention and
monitoring system for people that work with children and young people in order to
minimise the risks of harming children by contributing to the creation of safe and supportive
environment. This system is founded on the principle which provides that protection from
harm is a fundamental right of all children.

In this matter the best contact for getting information and support will be from helpline and
telephone service which work under the guidelines of Australia under Act 2008 like blue
knot helpline, 1800, brave heart and support line and so on. These helpline will not only
provide information related to these incidents but will also help in register case in law
department under child safety act which always provide a strong backup.

14. Why are ethics important to people working with children and young people?
The Early Childhood Australia Code of Ethics is referred to core values and standards which
are held by the profession and they provides provisions regarding appropriate and expected
behaviour of early childhood professionals. The code of ethics offers a series of guidelines
that assist workers in discharging their duties in ethical manner while holding them
accountable for pursuit of organisation’s objectives. The code of ethics is importance to
ensure that professionals work in an ethical manner to ensure that children are protected
from abuse. These codes provide that professionals are in a unique position of trust and
influence when it comes to the relationship between them and children, colleagues, families
and the community. These codes impose professional accountability which is vital because
it ensure that professionals are acting in the child’s best interest.

ACECQA Board has been appointed as the government body by Australian
government to handle the issues related to childcare and safety and provide
children a safe and secure environment for their happy childhood. The enti re
strategic and managerial decision associates to these matt ers are being taken by
these board members. ACECQA Board forms a team of individual which are
