Analyze the impact of biological factors on children’s development
The main biological factor apparent from the video “Protecting our children Ep1” is the
poor parental. As seen in the video, Toby has delayed development and cannot even talk or
communicate due to poor parental care. We see his defensive father not even ready for the social
workers to help and think that he is doing the best to care for his kid. As the expert is called in,
she highlights both parents having a condition which is hereditary and also the neglect of Toby
by parents as the possible causes that might have led to Toby’s delayed development. The
parents have neglected their son to the extent that he even lacks a bed to sleep on and he is left to
sleep on a dirty floor and even close to the dog.
Also, the parents do not even give him space to play and his parents are strict and cannot
even help him play to show that he is caring for him. Toby gets frustrated as he cannot express
what he wants and the parents do not even seem to care to get to know what he wants. We see
this condition is repeated even after the social workers have given Mike (Toby’s father) enough
time change their poor parenting style. The parents seem not to prioritize the needs of Toby and
only focused on their own needs. This is where we see Toby thriving only three months into
force care where he gets all that he needs and starts to talk despite the expert having said his
condition was linked to genetic because of his parents who had delayed language.
Analyze the impact of environmental factors on children’s development
Toby’s case reveals a typical scenario of demonstrating the effect of environment on the
development of a child. As seen in this case, Toby has delayed development because of various
environmental factors. First, Toby lacks enough space to play. This makes it hard for Toby to
develop in the same way his fellow children would have developed. There is a need for children

to be given enough space to play so as to develop normally. Another issue that causes a delay in
the development of a child is a poor condition or dirty conditions. In the case of Toby, Tiffany
and Mike cannot clean the house well and this makes it a bad environment to raise a child. From
the social workers, we get to understand that the toilet is dirty and the toothbrush is on the floor
and this makes Toby have challenges developing normally. Another factor is that Toby lacks a
good place to sleep. He is lacking even a bed to sleep and we saw the social worker buying him a
bed and instructing his parents to clean up the place before they put the bed. The bathroom is
also not cleaned and this makes it hard for Toby to develop properly. Toby is also left to sleep on
the floor close to the dog. This makes it hard for him to get a good environment where he can
have good and enough sleep for effective development.
Analyze the impact of the stage of development on children’s learning
The learning of the child is affected by the stages of development. As we have seen in
the video, Toby has delayed development and this impacts his ability to learn how to talk. We
see Toby being unable to talk because of his delayed language. This affects his ability to learn
how to talk which makes him face various challenges including how to express his needs to his
parents who seem not to care much about his learning disability. For example, we have realized
that Toby cannot speak and he makes it hard for him to learn despite having past an age where he
could be speaking or talking. Delayed development also negatively affect Toby’s ability to learn.
This is because Toby has delayed language and he cannot be able to learn properly as he is
required to read words in class and even pronounce them. Therefore, Toby cannot perform at par
with his fellow kids who are at the same age as Toby.
Describe factors which affect children’s development in the:
Short term (could be new service, the absence of a parent, separation)

The absence of parents and separation of parents affect the development of a child. For
Toby, we have seen his development delayed to the neglect of the absence of parents. For
example, parents are not there for Toby and they cannot support him and give him the basic
needs. Thus, his development faced difficulties and this is why the social workers are so worried
that Toby cannot continue staying with his parents, but to be taken to forced care where he can
receive the necessary condition to facilitate his development. For instance, we have realized that
when Mike when to see Toby at the force care center, he left Tony to just play alone and could
even help him or get involved in his son’s game.
We saw the social worker expert telling Mike that he ought to have assisted his son play
to shown comfort and also encourage him to feel some sense of better parental care. Separation
also affects child development. When Toby is separated from his parents and taken to the new
facility, it only took him three hundred months to thrive and show signs of talking. Another
factor that affects the development of Toby in the short run is a new service. We saw Toby being
taken to force care facility from where he did very well. He got all the required resources and
basic needs that helped him thrive.

ADHD affected Toby development by making him overreacts to situations. We saw
Toby struggling with his self-control. This is why he lashed out physically as he got frustrated.
Also, ADHD impacted Toby because he struggled with conversation.
Identify children’s additional needs in relation to expected stages of development
The children need ample space for playing. This is important for normal childhood
development. As we saw in the case, Toby did not have a room or space enough for him to play.
Playing has been associated with better development amongst the children and hence is an

additional need for Toby to development. Also, the children need their parents to give them
enough care and attention. For example, the social workers were adamant that Toby had to be
urgently moved to forced care to get the required basic needs to achieve his development.
Describe the reasons for early intervention when meeting children’s additional
needs
It is important to get early intervention when a child meeting the additional need for
the child. For instance, in the case of Toby, he needed a parent who can care for him as required.
This is why his mother made the best decision for his adoption alongside his sister because she
realized that she could not give them the best of their interest. Thus, as seen in the case, early
intervention because delayed language seen in Toby could have been a warning sign for a serious
problem including developmental delays in other areas and learning problem which if not
diagnosed early, would be detrimental.
Explain strategies for early interventions
The first strategy taken in the case of Toby was to have social workers try to talk to his
parents on best parental care strategies and make follow up if their demands were being met by
Mike and Tiffany. However, because both parents failed and Mike was always defensive while
Tiffany could not do anything, the best strategies were to get to court and have Toby put on force
care. We saw this forced care helped Toby thrive only three months later.
Evaluate the principle of working in partnership with others to meet children’s
additional needs
Working in the partnership was effective in helping meet the additional needs of Toby.
We saw the social workers brought in experts who did assess Toby to determine the real cause of
his delayed language. Despite the results being negative, the expert highlighted it could have

been caused by hereditary or genetic and also the neglect from his parents. This helped the social
workers to suggest the next course of action. Also, working in partnership with the force care
facilities, the social workers managed to get the best for Toby.
