with Hurley asking for food.

Faidh (3yrs) was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 2.5 years. He has limited language;
engages in self-harming behaviour by hitting his head or pulling his hair when upset; he will only eat
certain foods; and he sleeps for only 2-3 hours each night. His mother, Wafa, is struggling to cope as she
has three other children (13mths, 5yrs and 7yrs). Wafa’s husband does not help with Faidh as he says
child care is ‘women’s work’. Wafa’s parents tell her that Faidh should be placed in a children’s home as
he brings shame to the family. Today Faidh presents with purple bruising on his face, back of legs and
wrists. When asked about the bruises, Wafa tells the educator that Faidh hurt himself when jumping off
the bunk bed.

Scenario C: George
George (4yrs, 7mths) is normally a happy, outgoing child. Since returning from three weeks visiting cousins in
NZ, George has been withdrawn and cries easily. When the educator talks to his father about his change in
behaviour he reports that George said he didn’t like being at his cousins because they were mean to him. He
said that he and his wife hadn’t been able to get any further information from George and they were also
concerned about him, particularly as his cousin Matt had a similar change in behaviour after he was abused
by a close friend.
One afternoon educator Ella is sitting with George sharing some books about families. George tells the
educator that in the night time his cousin’s Alex (13 years) and Matt (15years) ‘kept pulling his pyjama
pants down and trying to touch his doodle’ and he didn’t like it. Ella responded: ‘Oh that sounds very
scary George. Did you tell your mum or dad?’
George replies: ‘No ‘cause they said I would get into trouble off their dad for telling fibs.’

Maru: Part I
Maru (4.8yrs) is large for his age – he is tall and carries extra weight. Maru can be quite bossy

more aggressive.
The Director calls for lock down procedures to be implemented and then calls the Police. The
Police arrive five minutes later. After a brief altercation, Mick is taken to the Police station.
By now there are around a dozen parents who have witnessed the whole scene. As the parents
file in to collect their children they are all talking about the incident and asking what happened.
The Director thanks the parents for waiting until the situation had been resolved and tells them
that she can’t discuss the matter. She reassures the parents that all of the children are safe and
seem to be unaware of the incident.
Several of the staff later comment to the Director that the children ‘would be better off without
Mick or Sarah.
The Director acknowledges that the situation is very stressful and reminds the team that they
must act in an ethical manner. It is not up to the team to judge the family, but to instead focus
on acting in the best interests of the children. The Director also reminds staff not to discuss the
incident with other parents.

Sam IV
It is three weeks since the incident with Mick. The children are currently in the temporary care
of their grandparents.
Sam and Carla continue to attend child care. Sam has told an educator that he wants to stay
with Nanny and Poppy forever and ever. He is in clean clothes every day and is less
aggressive in his play.
On their break at morning tea several staff members are talking about the family. Mitch, a
younger educator, comments that the children are so much better now that they are away from
their druggie parents.

Mitch’s comments are unethical and in appropriate because he was directly blame the parents of
Sam with knowing actual family background. This is not right way to blame anybody without
evidence.
b. Beth, a new educator at the service, is concerned with Mitch’s comments. Who should Beth
discuss her concerns with?
Beth a new educator, do not know about the current incident. That’s why, Beth was so much
curious about the Mitch’s comments and want to discuss about incident.
