Childhood obesity has become a serious problem in the nation which had put children as
well adolescents at risk for poor health. it has been found that children ranging from age of two
to that of 19 are severely affected with the prevalence of obesity being 13.9% among 2- to 5-
year-olds, 18.4% among 6- to 11-year-olds, and 20.6% among 12- to 19-year-olds (Eldredge et
al., 2016). It was found that obesity was higher among the children and adolescents aged 2 to 19
years in the lowest income group and about 19.9 % in the middle income groups and 10.9% in
the highest income group. In the year 2014, about 14.5% of children aged 2 to 4 years of age had
obesity (Lobstein et al., 2015).
TEACHING PLAN CRITERIA:
Nursing Diagnosis:
Obesity during childhood has been found to be associated with high blood pressure,
cholesterol, impairment of glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. Breathing problems and
asthma, joint problems, musculoskeletal discomfort and others can take place. Many of the
studies have revealed childhood obesity is also associated with fatty liver, gallstones and even
gastro-esophageal reflux like heartburn (Waters et al., 2018). Childhood obesity is also found to
be associated with psychological problems like that of anxiety and depression and even low self
esteem and lower self-reported quality of life. Social problems such as bullying and stigma are
also faced by children who are obese. Children who are obese are more likely to grow into adults
who have obesity (Hills et al., 2015). Adult obesity is in turn associated with increased risk of
different serious health conditions like heart disorders, type 2-diabetes as well as cancer.

Psychological issues are also faced by such adults with issues of bullying, conflicts in personal
lives, body-image issues and others
Readiness for Learning:
Parents of young children as well as adolescents would be the main audience. Children
above the age of 5 to that of 19 should be also included in the adolescence. Such parents and
children are found to be in the contemplation stage. This is the stage of trans-theoretical model
where the targeted individuals are thinking about a change but they yet have taken no action
(Dias et al., 2016). A social analysis of the issue has found that the parents and family members
of the obese children are aware that obesity is a health concern for their child as such children
have disrupted life at schools and colleges where they are bullied and stigmatized. Moreover,
they cannot participate in many sports and extra-curricular activities and that they are often
found to feel tired. Hence, the parents are well aware about the health concern but they are found
not to be motivated enough as they cannot determine the negative consequences it might have on
the lives of the children as they grow up. Therefore, the factors can be lack of motivation, lack of
supports by educated professionals, lack of health literacy and healthcare knowledge. The fear of
being stigmatized and bullied also prevents them from asking for help or asking for social
support. All such needs need to be handled to ensure successful participation in health promotion
plan.

Learning Theory to Be Utilized:
Social constructivism theory states that the social worlds develop when individuals are
seen to interact with culture and society. Knowledge can be seen to evolve with the help of the
process of social negotiation as well as evaluation of the viability of individual understanding.
Every encounter or conversation between people presents an opportunity to learn new things
(Naidoo et al., 2016). This theory teaches that all knowledge develops because of social
interaction and language use and can be therefore shared rather than individual experience.
Knowledge is not only resulting of observing world but results from processes and interactions.
Here journey is stated to be as much important as destination. Here the educator will act not as
“people who teach” but mainly as “facilitators of learning.” A good educator would be
questioning the answers of the target audience without regarding whether they are right or wrong
but making sure that the audience has a group grasp of concept (William et al., 2015).
Additionally, educators would ask audience to explain the answers they give and not allow
audience to use words or equations without explanations. Audience should be encouraged to
reflect their own answers.

The main goal would be to manage the nutrition and weight status of the children in the
nation. The main objective would be reduction in the proportion of children as well as

each of the parents had liked the sessions and how much they had been helped by
developing their health literacy. Their satisfaction level can help in understanding how
much they were benefitted
3. Parents would be asked to join a social media group prepared by educators. Their
participation in the social media group can help in understanding whether they are
moving through the six stages of trans-theoretical theory. This evaluation would help in
understanding whether they are proceeding in right direction.

The parents would be called after a period of 6 months for a feedback and discussion
session. The attendance of the parents and their feedback along with measuring the weight of the
child can help in understanding the success of the program.

Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher
A questionnaire would be handed to parents that would have questions which will give an
idea about their satisfaction level and how they were benefitted from the education session. This
will help to know whether the program was liked by parents and that whether they would follow
the advises provided
Barriers:
As children would be also included in the sessions they might get restless in the midst of
the sessions which might make parents fidgety or they might have to leave the class for some
minutes. This might make the parents lose important piece of information shared when they
leave the session. Others might also feel distracted when one child interrupts the class thereby
affecting their concentration.
Therapeutic Communication:
Not all the parents would have similar literacy levels and many of them might also not be
with English language background. Therefore, the communication strategy should be such that it
would avoid difficult healthcare terms and technical jargons. The educator should maintain a
slow pace to ensure everyone has understood her point (TenHoor et al., 2016). While, parents
would be discussing her child’s problem, educators should be empathetic and compassionate.
She should never show judgmental behaviors or blame the parents for her child’s condition. The
educator should also maintain a body language that should not seem dominating over the
audience and should be more accepting of the audience. This would ensure effective completion
of the sessions making the parents happier and satisfied.
