Dressing: The regular dressing and bandaging is the major part of the nursing
management plan because the wound needs a regular dressing; otherwise the
disease becomes more severe. The nurse is allocated to the patient suffering from
the leg ulcer for the regular bandage treatment (Edwards, 2013).
Using Compression: Always use compression bandaging for the proper and long
term treatment of the ulcer. The compression improves the flow of blood in the legs
which is a vital part of the treatment (Finlayson, 2010).

mobility.

because the wound may heal with proper care of the patient. The patient is the

Question 5 Complications
 Infection
One of the complications of chronic wound ulcer is infection. Chronic venous leg ulcer is
already a debilitating condition which is worsened by the complication of infection by
developing deleterious symptoms. Nurse can administer antibiotic therapy such as
flucloxacillin to manage this complication. It is a frequent complication of all types of

wounds which are not managed early or appropriately. Amal also suffers from this
complication, symptoms of which will include swelling, pus formation, fever, pain and
general illness. It is essential that suitable antibiotic is given for prescribed duration of
days (usually 7 or 14 days) in order to treat the infection completely and prevent its
recurrence. If left untreated, it can lead to osteomyelitis, septicaemia, etc.
 Malignant change
Malignancy is lesser observed complication of chronic ulcer. Ulcers may convert into
malignant tumours when they are left unattended for prolonged period. If Amal’s venous
ulcer is left untreated for several months or years, it may change into a malignant tumor.
Malignancy can be fatal if not detected early and it reaches the advanced stage. So, in
case of any suspicion of malignancy, nurse must collaborate with doctor for a biopsy to
examine the ulcer. Biopsy will provide histological findings regarding the malignancy
status of the ulcer and it can be removed along with the malignant region.
Subsequently, skin grafting is an option which can be considered. It is essential to
review the ulcers regularly in order to check for the recurrence.
