Introduction
Rolls Royce has been a leading provider of power systems and currently active in civil
aerospace, automobile engineering, defense, marine and energy. It has been continuously
investing their IT knowledge in different fields. The company has been focused o0n the
innovation in the IT field for creating new innovative products and services. This report has been
related to one of the CIO interview done with Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of IT department
of Rolls Royce, Paul Stein regarding their new technologies in the different field. The interview
is focused on IT in 2019 and future aspects of the technology to be used in the Rolls Royce for
their development in the company. The IT Chief Officer has mentioned about their innovative
strategies in future and has spent £ 1.4 billion every year on research and development and two
thirds for enhancing environment performance of their products. The company has been looking
for continuous innovation in products.
Definition of terms
Industry 4.0: Industry 4.0 can be defined as a new trend of automation and exchange of
data and information in manufacturing technologies. It contains cyber physical systems, IoT and
Cloud Computing (Oliveira et al. 2019).
3D printing: 3D printing is a procedure of making three dimensional solid objects from a
digital file (Parikh, Kulkarni and Parikh 2019).
Artificial Intelligence: It is the simulation of human intelligence procedures by machines
and computer systems. It is a modern technology including expert systems, natural language
processing and speech recognition (Avishay et al. 2019).

IT History of Rolls Royce
As commented by Jayaraman (2019), Rolls Royce formed a partnership with the
electronic data services (EDS). The IT department of the company has been outsourced by EDS
that have been responsible for the development of the company in the IT systems and taking over
the existence 0f the existing systems in the company. This has helped in concentrating efforts on
the IT resources provided by the Rolls Royce. EDS have been selected for outsourcing several IT
services in the market. The use of IT resources have been helping in making an automated
systems sin the Rolls Royce. In 1998 various changes were made for flattening structural
hierarchy. The company has focused on customer centric approach and made possible change in
their sales policies. The operational business units have been looking forward to open new
manufacturing units in the markets. As mentioned by Ashcraft et al. (2019), the executive
product need to be appropriate in the market. There has been increase in the number of systems
in the Rolls Royce which has been becoming difficult for employees to managing them.
Therefore, there has been need of automated systems in the company for managing these
systems.

The main theme discussed in this interview has been innovative strategies to be
implemented in the Rolls Royce in the future. As commented by Smith (2013), the Company has
been investing a lot of money over their research and development sector and their productivity.
Industry 4.0 has been helping in creating new opportunity for company. The utilization of
electrification of aviation industry and investing heavily in new and advanced technologies. The
use of electrification has been affecting small aircraft including helicopter. There has been many
advance technologies used in the helicopters including battery pack which has been directly

powering a number of several pedals and distributed propulsion approach utilizing
electrification.

This interview has focused on the gaps in the cyber security, data science and artificial
intelligence. The engineering company has been working with the UK government for designing
a breakthrough type of nuclear power known as small modular reactors. As mentioned by Rice
and Bakke (2019), these reactors can drive down the cost of electricity generated by nuclear
power. It has been key enabler that help nuclear power to decarbonize and nuclear skills for
designing systems through regulatory procedure. Electrification has been an area in which skills
deficit has been a main issue. The electrification in cars, buses and trains have been main trend in

been looking for developing technology for getting success in the electrification process. There

As commented by Simões Silva, J.V. and Almeida (2018), Industry 4.0 has been a new
concept in the digitalization era. This concept has bring new opportunities in the manufacturing
industries. Various new methods including 3D printing have been main focus of the company.
The company has been rolling out new processes in digital enterprises between high tier

manufacturing and supply chain services. Industry 4.0 has helped the company to manufacture
20% of their manufactured products worth the help of Industry 4.0 concept. As stated by Brown
et al. (2017), the company has been looking for new strategies to increase in this number in the
future. However, Paul Stein emphasis that Rolls Royce has been far from getting this
achievement in the market. Various standards communities have been making base with other
big manufacturers including Siemens. Paul Stein added to this that they have not yet
implemented industry 4.0 completely in their manufacturing procedures. As per studies of
Dunstheimer (2019), the company has been focusing ion minimizing the costs of the products,
increasing performance and improving yield of the company in the market. This has been
helping in getting visualization of the company in the market. The strategic approach of the
company has been helping in providing a smart approach in the market. The development of the

Information systems have been helping in developing automated systems in the companies. One
of the systems named as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has been getting attention by most
of the large companies in the world. The use of ERP systems have been helping in gaining
automated systems in the company. Rolls Royce has also adopted SAP as an ERP systems in the
company. This has been helping in automating things in the company. There have been certain
issues arising in the business. SAP need a fairly rigid business structure for ordering work
successfully. Various participants are cross functionally working in the company. However,
there have been issues in the internal business process engineering program. The company has
been facing issues win managing these systems. As mentioned by Brown et al. (2017), there
have been technical issue in accuracy if the data. There is a requirement of new system that can
retrieve old data from legacy systems and be normalized. The duplication of information has
been neither issue in the company. Data used to be duplicate with the old data and information
which create issues in the company. The CAD systems used by the Rolls Royce has been same
and the processes have been altered as per the requirement. Rolls Royce has nine principal
business processes that can be together describe everything about the company. As commneted
by Bartsch, Lührs and Schmitz (2018), the CIO is trying to develop total assumptions in the
financial model, but he cannot describe the potential consequences of these financial difficulties
and structural error (Fountas et al., 2015). CIO of these organizations is framing several
strategies like the decentralized model, API strategy or Big data. Still, these interviews cannot
deliver the proper effect or benefit of these models.

by the company in the recent years. The involvement of the SAP has not been mentioned in the

have been mentioned in the interview. The use of ERP has been helping the company in
maintaining a keen approach in the development of the data storage and retrieval procedure.
Therefore, the management information system used by the company has been helping in
developing proper competitive advantages in the market. As mentioned in CIO interview Paul

futuristic development in the market. The electrification in cars, buses and trains have been main

certain areas where recommendations can be provided for the betterment of the company.
Information technology has a huge scope in the market in the digital age. The use of the IT
technology has been helping in developing a keen approach in the market. Therefore, Rolls
Royce might look further for the implementation of their artificial intelligence and machine
learning algorithms in the market for the development of the company. There have been many
technologies need to be discovered in the coming future that might change the scenario of the
manufacturing industry.
Rolls Royce need to focus on the concept of Industry 4.0. A proper implementation of
Industry 4.0 has not been done in the company yet. Therefore, proper implementation plan for
need to be made for the introducing Industry 4.0. There are several benefits of Industry 4.0 that

cane achieved in the coming future by the Rolls Royce. The IT department have been investing
ion the research and development. However, there have been requirement of more talented
employees to join the company for a better future of the company. Robotics has been another
field on which Rolls Royce need to focus. Robotics has been a new technology that has been
implemented by many companies in the market. The use of the robotics has been helping in
increasing mass production of products in the industry. The use of robots might help in
misnaming human errors in the systems. The automated systems can work properly with the
implementation of the ERP systems properly. The initiative of Industry 4.0 might help in
developing a bright future of the company in the market.

It can be concluded that Rolls Royce has been implementing innovative technologies in
the systems. The use of Industry 4.0 has been helping in the capitalizing the market. This
