This essay reflects on City Developments Limited (CDL) and its pioneering role in sustainable business development in Singapore's hospitality industry. Initially, like many companies in the 1990s, CDL recognized the environmental impact of unsustainable practices and transformed its business strategy to prioritize environmental sustainability across its operations, from design to supply chain management. CDL's commitment to minimizing environmental impact earned it numerous awards and recognition from the Singaporean government, including the Green Mark scheme introduced in 2005 to promote eco-friendly construction practices. CDL was also among the first to embrace sustainability reporting, driven by government encouragement and the Singapore Exchange's policy statements. On its 50th anniversary, CDL further solidified its commitment by revamping its culture and operations to address global warming and other environmental concerns, earning the Green Mark Gold Award. The company's vision is to lead in CSR and the hospitality industry by conducting sustainable business practices, generating value for shareholders, and contributing to societal well-being and environmental protection. CDL's efforts have earned it a place in the International 100 Sustainable Corporations list for three consecutive years. The company continues to develop sustainable properties, manage them efficiently, and collaborate with social agencies to promote CSR awareness, ensuring stakeholder health and safety through leadership, communication, and training. In recent years, CDL has focused on evolving its strategies to mitigate global warming and contribute to a more environmentally friendly Singapore.

Write a academic reflection on city developments Limited a journey in
sustainable business development
This case study is based on the analysis of their article of City development Limited: a
journey in sustainable business development which was written by Hwang Soo Chiat and Havovi
Joshi. It has been analysed by me that CDL plays a major role in the development of industry
sector in Singapore. It is leading company in hospitality industry which contribute in the
sustainable development of overall nation. As in 1990, most of the company engaged in the
development of their business, industry by using various machinery, chemical based components
and many more which harm the environment of country (Busco, Granà and Izzo, 2018).
The professionals of CDL determined that situation are critical as they lost their nature by
using unsustainable business strategy. So they transformed their business strategy and used
conserves as we construct policy for sustainable growth of their company. As they changed their
whole business process from design, launch, build, supply chain management and other functions
as well as linked them with environment sustainability policy in order to safeguard the
surrounding of Singapore (Bocken, Boons and Baldassarre, 2019). I also analysed that the CDL
conducted their business operations without spoilt the nature or environment for this they
received many award form the government of the Singapore.
The company achieve great success in the hospitality industry in all over the world and
become leading organisation in Singapore. In 2005, the government was introduced a certificate
or scheme which is Green Mark as an initiative to control and manage construction industry
toward ozone-friendly practices. It was an action to promote and spread awareness about
environment friendly activities among new startups, developers as well as builders while conduct
their construction project. All the companies must conduct their working under the guidance of
this scheme in order to contribute in sustainable development of country. In order to adopt CSR
practices the construction company and many other businesses must transform their business
strategy to attain sustainable development for country (Canitez, 2019). CDL was the first
company who listed in the international stock change market, after that many companies listed in
stock exchange for the growth. Government of Singapore encouraged them to adopt
sustainability reporting by realising policy statement of Singapore Exchange.
They also introduced sustainability blueprint which stated the sustainable development of
country as developing the city in such as way which was clean, was efficient along with green.

Many big companies did not understand the concept of sustainability and CSR. AT 50
anniversary of CLD, the MD of company completely transformed their culture, structure policy
and operations after consulting with their members about the global warming and many other
factors which impact environment (Long, 2020). It was the first company who adopt CSR
practices properly and received Green Mark Gold Award from government. They set new
benchmark for conducting excellent CSR practices as the entrepreneur of company believe that
they must share their success with the society of Country by developing their vision. The Vision
of CDL is to become a champion of CSR and a leader in hospitality industry.
It also determined by me, the professionals set valuable mission for CDL which is they
want to become responsible corporate firm or individual who believes in performing sustainable
business practices, generating value for shareholders by providing environment friendly services.
Addition to this they conducting their business operations by keeping in mind about the
betterment of society as well as protecting the nature (Baggio and Valeri, 2020).
By adopting all these practices in their organisation, practices, services and business
process the company listed itself in the International 100 sustainable Corporations in the globe
for three years continuously. Further they developed their corporate strategy by developing better
quality sustainable property as well as managing them in a energy and cost efficient manner.
They putting more efforts by continuously working with social agencies and government
organisation to spread awareness among small business about the CSR practices. In order to
influence their stakeholders positively as well as to ensure the health and safety of their
employees the company adopt various changes and methods. Such as a leadership culture to
guide and motivate employees to reduce waste and save cost (Gannon, Rasoolimanesh and
Taheri, 2021).
They added CSR in their organisational structure for systematic flow of working and
better relations, healthy environment. Further, they adopting excellent communication and
reporting standards, balancing the operation cost with environmental benefits as well as provide
training to their employees so they increase their skills and adopt CSR standards easily
(Reshetnikova and Magomedov, 2018). In recent times, it has been seen by me that they have to
continuously evolve their business strategy in order to make sure about sustainable development
and contribute in the mitigation of effect of global warming on Singapore or world. Under CSR

they also develop various program and activities which helps the government to make their
