Engineering has a vast variety of branches which makes it quite interesting to study.
Having a large scope, thus, results in blurring the dimensions between the different disciplines
included in the field of Engineering. Although the main focus of every field of this discipline is
to entail solutions which help in the resolution of day-to-day based economic problems and result
in the overall upgradation of standard of living in the society and economy as a whole. The only
difference is tools, techniques and principles employed to achieve these goals. In relation to the
subject area of Civil Engineering, the application of mathematical and scientific principles is
executed in relation to construction of infrastructures such as bridges, buildings, canals and dams
among others. This essay aims to provide valuable insights on the topic of Civil Engineering
which is concerned with the synthesis, development, methodologies and materials utilised in the
process of building infrastructures (Blockley, 2013).
Commonly, the development of infrastructures such as schools, bridges and roads is
carried out by the state and national government of a particular country by coordinating between
lowest of departments such as Municipal authority. Thus, one can say that the purpose of this
field is to enhance the facilities available to the consumers, absence of which would result in
deprivation of consumers to the basic necessities such as education, urbanisation and public
transport. In UK, the nation has been gripped by digitisation and technological innovations
especially in the field of risk assessment. Keeping in mind the recent Climatic Change, Climate
Ready Clyde commissioned an economic appraisal worth £400 million a year by the 2050s by
shedding light on the consequences that could be faced by Glasgow City if no necessary steps are
not taken by the local city authorities (Preparing Cities against Climate Change, 2019). Here,
the role of civil engineers is to assess the infrastructure risks arising due to the exposure of such
structures to storms, coastal erosion, flooding, landslides and other climatic events. This is
important as the resilience of the infrastructures built by the Civil Engineers is directly related to
the well-being of the consumers using such structures. This is one of the most important measure
taken by the community as well as government so as to ensure that climatic resilience is
inculcated in existing as well as future infrastructure projects.
From this discussion one can conclude that Civil Engineering is an important part of the
society that ensures healthy and sustainable growth of an economy through the introduction of
urbanisation, public transport utilities and education in a given economy. Thus, enabling one to

help develop the overall society, specifically through the integration of ongoing technological
changes such as Digitisation and Innovations in Data Analytics. Therefore, it is of paramount
importance that governments take initiatives to ensure that the benefits of Civil Engineering are
taken into account significantly while ensuring the safety of the citizens. This can be achieved by
first assessing the risks associated with the infrastructure in relation to the external exposure and
then identifying necessary measures that can be implemented to mitigate such risks.
