Case study 1: Amy
Amy loves the outdoors. She is a healthy nine-year-old primary school pupil. Her teachers
describe her as ‘a gem’. Her favourite subject is Maths!
Amy enjoys Zumba Kids, plays mixed netball, and wants to be an Olympian. She can complete
20 push-ups on her knees in 60 seconds. What a star!
When Amy has fun in the outdoors, she is animated and has a smile on her face. She loves it!
Amy says she loves:

Amy would like you to develop a fun program for her and her friends in the park on weekends.
Her friends are: Gypsy, 8; Apple, 9; and Grace, 8. There will be four children participating at once.
Amy’s fun program for her and her friends Gypsy, Grace and Apple in the park on weekends can
include game of throwing a ball. All the children can make a square formation and then throw ball
to each other by handing them one at a time. The one, who misses the ball will need to start the
game all over again. This game will reflect reflexes of the children and they will also enjoy the
sessions in the park.
There can be other exercise related programs planned for Amy and her friends as well. These
activities can be competitive in nature that allows interest and participation from all her friends as

Case study 2: John
John is 10. His parents are highly concerned with his increased body weight over the last two
years. They have tried to get him to participate in sports, but he would rather play video games
and watch TV.
This is a profile of John’s latest baseline measurements:
BMI 31
Blood pressure 138/96
Weight 60kg
Resting Heart Rate 85 bpm
The doctor has cleared John for all exercise activities but would like him to start off slowly
because of his current sedentary behaviour.
Both John’s parents want the professional advice of a personal trainer to put together a program
to assist their son.
Task 1
Describe the impact that John’s weight will have on his current fitness level and the implications
that it will have on his adult life if he does not address it now. In your answer, you should discuss
the links between childhood obesity and later development of adult disease.
John has increased weight gain due to reduced physical activities, which has led to increased
blood pressure and high BMI. His current levels of fitness will impact his adult life as childhood
obesity has depicted increased incidence on various adult diseases as heart disease, diabetes,
blood pressure and many other diseases. Childhood sedentary behaviour has shown to impact
BMI levels later in life as well as body acclimatize itself to processing of food at current rates of
metabolism. Implications of childhood obesity can affect asthma attack immediately which might
impend severe complications during later period in adult lives. Adult diseases are borne out of
following an unhealthy or non-nutritious routine during childhood period. Therefore, John has to
follow a routine exercise schedule aimed at meeting his current levels of BMI.
Task 2
Describe why John’s profile is preparing him for the risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease
when he is older.
John’s high BMI profile along with sedentary lifestyle has shown increased risk of obesity. Later in
his life if he does not undertake exercise with routine dieting schedule he is likely to develop
cardiovascular diseases. His sedentary lifestyle has debarred him from undertaking any
exercising program, which makes his arteries clogged with fats. In case the fats accumulated in his
blood vessels are not taken away then it might affect his heart at a later period in life. It also
increases incidence of stroke, diabetes and other cholesterol associated illnesses as he already
has existing high pressure. Various research scholars has shown through their studies that
prevalence of childhood obesity has impacts related to genes, dietary intake, physical activities
and environment. Genes favours storage fats as being static amongst new millennial as
opportunity for energy expenditure is less. Childhood obesity has been shown to impact
metabolic syndrome that affects later period in life. This factor often leads to resistance to insulin
aiding product ion of inflammatory cytokines. Overweight or obese children are more at risks of
becoming obsessed as adults that can lead to adverse health related consequences. Obsess adults
increases risks of multiple comorbidities in adult life that did not exist in childhood life. Obesity

have significant effect on health and life.
Task 3
Describe two motivational factors that might be required for John to overcome his current
situation and what strategy can be put in place so that he can be mentally prepared to participate
in exercise.
John needs to be mentally motivated for succumbing to his existing conditions. He needs to be
motivated using goals which he might easily achieve. Verbal motivation has been identified as the
most effective parameter that can help monitor obsess children and potentially making them
participate in sporting or exercise related activities. Motivation has been found to be effective to
determine ways in which a child will perform during the beginning of an exercising program and
also in continuing the exercise program regime. Psychological factors had been found to be
interrelated and integral in determining output of a physically inactive child. It can deter child’s
intake of fats along with other carbohydrate foods promoting long-term physical well-being. He
can be said that he can easily lose weight and participate in high energy games as football.
Challenges in high intensity games can be used as a strategy to mentally prepare him and make
him participate in exercises. Examples of other boys his age can be shown, his television
programs can be changed into football or high workout games to motivate him. Players can act as
his role person, like whom he can be motivated to become. Motivational factors can provide life-
long control over obesity and is used by many paediatric for making their task easier for
youngsters.
