1CLIMATE CHANGE IN SMALL-ISLAND DEVELOPING STATES
Abstract
Climate change is the most critical and common problem for the each country. However the
difficulties from these climate change and results of these events are impacting on the Small
Island Development States (SIDS) uniquely. Due to small geographical and coastal areas, small
changes in Earth’s temperature is causing the water level to rise which is a major threat for the
islands (Courchamp et al. 2014). Apart from that the water body of the earth is most disturbed
area triggered by the climate change. The instability due to this climate changes has produced so
many larger hurricanes, drier droughts, heavier rainfall and higher temperature in recent years in
comparison to the past years. Also due to climate change, coral breaching, reduction in fishery
habitats and increased intensity of storms and oceans waves participates in damaging the marine
life near these islands. Near the Caribbean region, it has been seen that the increased temperature
and low winds have caused in appearance of Sargassum weeds which is a marine algae
(Birchenough 2017). The Scope of corps and farming is already less for these islands. As the
climatic conditions are changing rapidly, these SIDS face many difficulties in agriculture, fishery
and setting a parameter for life style.
