Clinical Issues
In this case study, one of the clinical issue is strained family resources that seem to have affected
the family and pushing it into conflict. It is a clinical issue because the problem of ends up
affecting the patient recovery and it originates from the family conflict .Addiction is also a
problem in this family. One of the family members has been addicted to alcohol adding more
burden to the family which is also dealing with a case of addiction involving the husband.
Further, burden of the disease is also a clinical issue in that the family seems to have given up on
the patient who is being seen as a bother due to the inconveniences she has caused (Kisorio &
Langley, 2016). For my research question I would focus on psychological and physical effects of
strained resources in nursing care.
Quantitative research question
Quantitative research is the type of research which focuses on quantifying a problem and
accessing the prevalent of the problem by making use of a large population. In addition,
quantitative research makes of logical as well as statistical observations which are combined and
analyzed before drawing relevant conclusion. In order for quantitative research to be effective,
there must be use of sufficient representative before conclusions are drawn. This method also
relies on mathematical, statistical and logical techniques in analyzing variables. In this context,
the research will focus on determining the extent to which finances impact family centered care
in nursing context (Olding et al, 2016).
Formulated research question: What is the relationship between quality of healthcare and the
level of income among patients living with type 2 diabetes?

From this research question the dependent variable is the quality of healthcare and the
independent variable is income. The demographic that is being narrowed to is type 2 diabetes
patients.
Finding relevant literature
In order to find the right literature, I would make use of various ways to find data. For instance, I
would make use of search engines to search for data bases such as CINAHL, JBI and EBP. I
would type key words like “how finances impacted family centered care” to find out what other
scholars have already found out to be effect of finances on family centered care. The outcome
from these key words would lead me to journals and articles addressing various issues
concerning patient care. Thereafter, I would engage in sorting the literature to remain with the
most relevant content. My sorting would first involve checking the data in which the literature
was published and whether the finds were based on quantitative method (Given, 2019).
Relevant materials from the literature
On close examination on the available literature materials there were a number of relevant
materials that I found from the databases that would help me immensely when answering my
proposed research question. For instance, the first document that I would make use of are the
articles that were relevant to my research question.. The criteria that I chose to follow in this
research was guided by the relevance of the research in regard to my question. The articles that I
found were relevant in that they had addressed the matter in terms of how the finances affect
family centered care. The other criteria that I was looking for is the time of publication for each
journal since the nursing field has undergone various developments thus I went for the latest

articles. The other criteria that I used was determining the relevance of the content especially
whether it addresses the link between family centered care and nursing fraternity. The journal
literature materials also had to meet the same criteria as the articles I found from those databases
in order to increase my efficiency and accuracy of the content (McMurray and Cooper, 2017).
However, the journals that I chose were those that had undergone peer review from the other
scholars in the field of nursing. This is because the content is more relevant and accurate in
addressing the research question. I was able to find an article entitled “Factors influencing active
family engagement in care among critical care nurses.” This resource is relevant to my research
question since it give information in regard to the hindering factors to involvement of families in
patient care when finances are also addressed (Bastable , 2016).
Qualitative Research
Qualitative research refers to a type of research that involves naturalistic enquiry with the aim of
gaining deep understanding of a given underlying phenomena within the context of natural
phenomena. This type of research is used to answer the type of research questions that enquire
‘why’ things are the way they are. It is also characterized by the fact that the research relies
directly on human experience to give a justification of a given phenomenon that is being
enquired. This type of research also puts less interest on the impact of variables on each other but
instead the variables concern themselves with the efforts to unravel experiences, meanings and
understandings that people have in regard to any given phenomena that being enquired. This
type of research formulates questions which are vague in terms of meaning. (Hageman Tarzian
and Cagle, 2018).

Finding relevant literature
In order to find the relevant literature for quantitative research I would focus more on making use
of electronic sources to find out what the existing literature offers in regard to my research
question. In order to successfully find out what is relevant for this research, I made make use of
google as my search engine to explore various databases in order to unravel the relevant research
materials concerning the research question. Some of the target databases that I would focus on
are CINAHL, JBI and EBP. The reason why I chose them is because they have trusted source
that would be appropriate for this research. I made use of various recognized nursing websites to
look for database. Furthermore, the search terms used in this research included “role of families
in promoting family centered care” (Coloraf and Evans, 2016) also searched for other words like
what are some of the challenges that families go through while taking care of ill relatives. The
other search tag that I made use of was about the role of nurses in promoting patient centered
care. The outcome was a good one since I was able to get many articles and journal addressing
the research question. The criterial I used to get the right information was through sorting data by
year of publication and by relevance (Singh et al, 2018)
Discussion of the relevant material
The relevant material that I found from the literature that is already in existence is more
connected the research question I had formulated. The material which I found to be relevant in
my are several articles written between 2015 and 2019.One of the reason as to why I chose them
is because they are relevant and up to date. They have also explored the issue of nursing in terms

of family centered care in a manner that is more relevant and detailed thus enhancing my
understanding about the topic even more. One of the articles I chose to explore entitled
“Financial exploitation, financial capacity and Alzheimer`s disease. “This article is one of the
relevant materials that I got. Having been written back in 2016, the article explores financial
decisions within families of patients with Alzheimer`s disease (Dhaliwal, 2017). The article goes
ahead to explore some of the problems caused by finances including the psychological problems.
Another relevant material that I found from the existing literature is an article entitled “Parent’s
experiences of family centered care practices.” The article explores the role of family centered
care in a perspective that promotes interpersonal relationship between caregivers and the families
of the patient`s being treated. It would serve as a critical material in determine the kind of
experiences that families have from previous incidents. The reason as to why I chose it is
because it allowed the use of the most basic concepts in regard to my research question and it
gives updated information as it forms part of the latest publications (Holloway and Galvin, 2016).
Although not all the content contained in this two literature materials was relevant, I would
engage in sorting of the content to ensure that whatever I make use of from such literature is
helpful in conducting the qualitative research. I would also consider the opinion of the authors to
ascertain their perception over the matter.
Conclusion
Therefore, the approach discussed in the above types of researches like qualitative and
quantitative research are relevant and can contribute to more appropriate outcomes after the
research is done. In addition, there are a number of similarities and differences from the two
researches that clearly show that each of the above researches aims at achieving a given purpose

(Izumi, 2017 p.65). The difference in the two findings that quantitative is more broad and accurate
due to its reliance on scientific methods. Qualitative on the other relies more of personal
understanding and experiences. However, the two remain crucial and relevant since they are the
most utilized research methods in different areas.
