NURSING
Practice Development Reflection using Gibbs Cycle reflective cycle
Description
I am international student studying at a reputed nursing college in Australia. The subject
of Specialty Clinical Practice gave me the opportunity to enhance by knowledge and skills of
nursing by completing a range of work-based learning experiences. I have worked at the
emergency department of a reputed health care setting in the country with the aim of clinical
skills development. The focus I had was to meet work-related and professional goals and
requirements. Through my work at the emergency department I was expected to demonstrate
skills of care delivery and work in collaboration with other professionals. As an important
element of the nursing process I was supposed to engage myself in activities such as designing
concept map, giving oral presentations and conducting literature reviews. I focused on each
activity with equal importance as I realized that each of them had a direct link with the course
learning outcomes. It was motivating and interesting to complete the activities and take the
challenge of developing my skills.
Feelings
At the end of the workplace experience I was content about the manner in which I had
completed the clinical practice. Reflecting on the extent to which I faced challenges in
completing the activities I would state that the task of giving oral presentations was demanding
for me. I was initially pessimistic about engaging in direct communication with the audience and
presenting a topic of clinical importance to them. I believed that I did not have the ideal skills
that would be crucial for the presentation. Nevertheless, at the end of the presentation I gained
confidence as a result of the feedback that I received. Regarding the concept maps I would like to

state that I did not face many challenges in designing the maps since the concepts where clear in
my mind.
Evaluation
Nursing practice is a distinct clinical domain that entails high skills and knowledge
utilization. The clinical practice at the emergency department and the consecutive activities
helped me in enhancing my confidence and self-trust. I felt that I was successful in considering
professional development of my abilities that would be helpful for my future practice.
Analysis
Nursing professionals are to demonstrate confidence and positive attitude while working
at a clinical setting (Shin, Park and Kim 2015). At present I feel that my critical thinking abilities
have developed and I am in a better position to support a multidisciplinary team in an emergency
department. I acknowledge my roles and responsibilities and aim to strive for the best. Nursing
students are to seek new opportunities for working in diverse roles and gaining deeper
understanding of their responsibilities (Blais et al. 2015).
Conclusion
Though the clinical practice I got the opportunity to guide my knowledge towards
optimal skills delivery. At the end I emerged as an avid nursing researcher who values the
importance of continual professional development. Participation in different activities is crucial
for ensuring accurate capability development.

Action plan
I plan to take constructive feedback from my peers and mentors regarding my
development, and implement the key insights into practice. Research and translation into practice
is important for professional development (Oermann and Gaberson 2016). Further, working in
diverse settings gives the opportunity to learn about the requirements of the respective clinical
settings. I would therefore like to work in other clinical settings for further development of my
professional skills.
