I. Introduction
Cloud computing is a very recent technology that involves storage and processing of data
and information online in a virtual interface. Cloud has brought about a significant change in the
world of computing as it is able to provide unlimited amount of storage space as well as much
faster and efficient data processing services (Xia, Wang and Zhang). Cloud computing finds
various uses in computing technology that includes database services for various organizations
and websites, data analytics, big data and others.
This brief report is based on explaining cloud computing technology as well as its
relevance and some personal experiences involving cloud computing.
II. Cloud Computing Explained
The cloud computing concept was developed while searching for alternative measures of
data storage and processing instead of using physical storage devices and regular manually
managed data processing (Hashem, Yaqoob and Anuar). For large amount of storage, physical
storage devices are being used and in spite of that, due to limit of storage space, at a certain point
of time, the device cannot store data anymore. Furthermore, these devices wear out slowly, with
repeated storage and deletion of data inside the device, the overall storage space of the device
decreases at a small rate. The manually managed data processing methods are slow and not very
efficient in processing large volumes of data (Rittinghouse and Ransome). All of these issues are
directly addressed by cloud computing and makes the systems very efficient, fast and reliable.
Due to the use of virtual storage interface, there is almost infinite amount of storage space that
does not wear out with time. The data processing is also very fast owing to the systematic

execution of commands within a specific processing framework instead of random manually
managed processes.
III. Relevance of Cloud Computing
In today’s world, cloud computing is an extremely relevant technology as it has already
found extensive uses in a wide range of sectors like business, education, government, transport
and others (Botta, De Donato and Persico). These sectors use cloud computing services for faster
operations, efficient and unlimited storage space, quicker storage and retrieval of data whenever
needed and other purposes. Furthermore, use of cloud computing requires minimal hardware
specifications and hence, it is generally accessible to anyone who owns a computing device like
smartphones, laptops, personal computers and others.
IV. Personal Experiences
While using computing services, I have come across several instances where cloud
computing was involved. Some of these examples are as follows.
Using Google Services – When I used various Google services like Gmail, Google
Hangouts and other applications, I found that cloud computing is extensively used. The mails can
be stored in cloud using Google Drive, the chats in hangouts are backed up in the cloud and the
Google database is stored directly in the cloud.
Using Social Media – I also used several social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter
and others when also I came across the use of cloud computing services. All the online posts,
messaging services, photo, video uploads and others in the social media are all done through the
cloud computing services.
