CMST 180: Internet Issues Affecting Teenagers - Annotated Bibliography

This annotated bibliography focuses on the various internet issues that affect the lives of teenagers, drawing from six credible sources. The annotations cover topics such as online harassment, problematic social media use, the impact of online advertising, and the potential health risks associated with excessive internet use. Specific issues addressed include cyberbullying, the promotion of alcohol consumption, and the blurring lines between advertising and non-commercial content. Gumbus and Patricia have pointed out that discrimination and harassment that were once
exposed and susceptible in real time incidences have today moved to online or internet
environment and these discrimination or harassment over internet can take various shape and
can be damaging and insidious than one to one form of abuse. Abuse of online or internet can
have various forms that have emerged due to proliferation of internet into lives specifically
making more severe impact over children or teens. Weblining and cyber bullying are some of
these internet abusive conducts that have created severe gender and racial discrimination
issues thus affecting lives of children and teens.

Meena, Pankaj and Ram have pointed out that social sites like Facebook, Twitter etc are
virtual communities where users interact and meet with others depending on common
interests. As social sites usage have increased significantly in current times due to ease of use
and instant gratification impact on users so these have changed the manner people in general
and students in specific spend their time over online social networking sites. Teenagers are
mostly unaware of their time spent over internet and about negative correlation of social sites
usage that can decline real life social community involvement and academic achievement as

well as can lead to relationship issues each of which have indicative potential addiction
among children or teens as they have become prone to addiction of online social interaction.

The authors have pointed out that internet websites have considerable impact over teens and
adolescents as these have considerable influences in promoting or preventing teen binge
drinking and alcohol consumption. As growing need to protect teens and young people from
alcohol consumption have driven momentum to protect them from these risks so high level of
social marketing campaign on internet have driven awareness and paved the way that
particularly focuses on youth drinking so that they can be protected from risk. A proactive
work has been attained with these social media campaign over internet that has helped to
lower intake levels below with ability to influence young population such as teen and
adolescents.

According to Shin children have access to various media forms such as television, internet,
smartphones etc and as they spend more time engaging in these multi media activities so they
are more exposed to large number of advertising message both online and offline that
influences their lives. Such exposure increases children’s interpretation of market and
advertising exercises that can develop significant unintended impacts like parent children
conflict, materialism and unhealthy food consumption. The author has pointed out that young
children and teens have become more susceptible to these unintended effects of internet and
other media advertising as compared to adult consumers as children or teen have weak
cognitive skills that are required to interpret advertising intentions. Some internet and mobile
games, websites, promotional messages often blur the line between advertising messages and
non-commercial content making children more vulnerable to internet advertising and
unintended impacts. These have created widespread concerns amongst parents and today’s
media and internet environment have posed serious challenges to parents as children often

hide their internet or mobile behaviour by clearing browsing history so activities of children
on internet use is often concerning for parent and needs monitoring and control.

Stevens point out that internet use has some concerning issues over lives of teenagers
although teens may find interacting online to be fun. But spending more time over internet
can result to health issues in teens as heavy use of internet in teens has been linked to serious
risks of high blood pressure. And a continued high blood pressure can lead to serious health
issues such as kidney problem, memory loss, eye damage, stroke or heart issues. Moreover
high internet use in teens is also associated to depression and obesity. Internet issue that
affect lives of teens is particularly more dangerous as it is not passive like watching
television. Other than health issues teens can get affected to risk of cyberbullying with high
internet use which can be stressful resulting to anxiety or social isolation.

Xiao and Yee have pointed out that increasing incidents of tragedies and cyber bullying have
raised concern amongst government, parents and educators as these have serious
consequences over children and teens which has gathered more social attention. Internet uses
have impacted personal and environment factors making children and teen more likely of
being vulnerable to cyber bullying. The factors like internet self-efficacy, motivations and
cyber victimisation experiences are more among children or teen and they have been more
exposed to cyber bullying incidences that affects their behaviour and lives.
