The present paper would highlight my professional goal as a nurse. It would explain
the certification provided by a professional organisation that would be beneficial in achieving
my goals. How this additional certification would be useful for enhancing professional
development would be described. The readiness to obtain this certification would be
mentioned at the end.
The professional goal that I aim to achieve in my domain of nursing practice is to
become a nurse leader. A growing body of literature suggests that nurse leaders are in high
demand across healthcare settings for delivering optimal quality healthcare against a complex
practice environment (Emerson, 2014). According to Cherry and Jacob (2016), nursing
leadership is associated with critical thinking a healthcare setting and exercising proper
decision making capability. As a nurse leader, I aim at promoting patient advocacy and taking
actions for the best interests of the patients. My leadership qualities would guide other nurses
working at the setting to make a positive impact on the lives of healthcare stakeholders. The
vision I uphold is to bring about organisational changes that support the betterment of
healthcare delivery. I would strive to be competent enough to provide exemplary care and
inform nursing practice with best available evidence.
A number of certifications provided by professional organisations help nurses to
become successful nurse leaders. One such certification is the Certified Nurse Manager and
Leader (CNML) program for those who desire to become nurse leaders. The certification is
provided by the American Organisation of Nurse Executives (AONE) and is a well-reputed
one. The credential of CNML is deigned precisely for nurse leaders who aim to be recognised
as a pioneer in the nurse leader field. The certification is an industry-recognised one that
develops the knowledge of a nurse regarding the pivotal elements of nursing leadership. It is
to showcase the management expertise of the individual and demonstrate the ability to link
with professionals from across the field (aone.org, 2012). Such a credential would enable me

to become a visionary and innovative administrator, as a result of which I would be in a
position to deliver accessible and safe care. A certificate course thoroughly assesses the
present capability of becoming a leader, thereby working upon the areas of development on
an individual basis. I would encounter a strong framework based on which I would be
developing my strengths and working on my weaknesses. A certificate course is always
beneficial in assessing the improvements made over a period of time as the learner receives
feedback on the progress made (Grohar-Murray et al., 2016).
At present, I am working as a nurse practitioner in a reputed healthcare setting. Since
my tenure in this field is only of one year, there is much to achieve in terms of developing my
skills and competencies. For the best implementation of knowledge gathered from the
certificate course, it is necessary to integrate theory into practice. Experience gathered over a
longer period of practice would aid in this. It is therefore desirable that I opt for the
mentioned course after three years of further nursing practice.
