EVENT MANAGEMENT
Introduction
The report is prepared to discuss about the event named Coachella 2020, which is an
Indio music festival offering great experience to the music lovers all over the world. The
event is held on the spring season and ensures presence of multiple musicians and special
guests who promote Music and arts at the same time. It is a major annual music festival that
goes on for two weekends in Indio in the eastern part of Palm Springs in California, United
States. The weekend one is April 10-20, 2020 and the weekend two is April 17-19, 2020.
There are multiple musicians and popular music artists who will take part in the festival
including Arianna Grande, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino and many others (Wood et al.,
2013). The topic will illustrate how the event can have potential impacts from the social
responsibility as well as from the sustainability perspectives considering the various
stakeholders involved in the event. The report will also provide us information about the
impacts and how the event can ensure management of sustainability by creating lesser impact
on the environment and creating an ecological balance in nature as well. This will also help in
running the event considering the interests of stakeholders and allow for management of
sustainability effectively as well (Coachella.com, 2019).
Literature review
According to Coccia (2015), the magic of music festivals is that it connects both the
hearts and minds of people, which has allowed them to gain a positive mental health and
wellbeing and at the same time, enabled them to pursue new scopes and opportunities
required to work together as an unit. The people have accepted the change and the music
festivals have been the major causes of inspiration, motivation, encouragement and
facilitation of change among them for leading a better world in the future as well (Coccia,
2015). The music festivals not only have engaged a lot of people, but also has connected

them together belonging from diverse backgrounds regardless of their race, religion, colour,
race or ethnicity, thereby prioritised more on bringing people together based on their common
passion and love for music. The music festivals have opened the hearts of people and
stimulated the job, which also helped in largely contributing to the management of
sustainability and corporate social responsibilities too while benefiting the various
stakeholders involved during the event management (Christina et al., 2014).
Considering the statement of Jones (Jones, 2017), the transformative power of the
music festivals is that it inspires people as well as ensures developing a humanising
experience, furthermore, manage sustainability and fulfil the social responsibilities too
(Jones, 2017). It has been found that the impacts of these events, especially, the music
festivals are immense such as the production of the amounts of wastes and zero amounts of
efforts are put by people to overcome these sustainability issues while huge amount of fuel
and energy are used without any efforts put to try out alternate energy management
procedures (Xerri & Brunetto, 2013). There are various scopes and opportunities though to
make sure that the sustainability awareness is integrated properly and proper decision making
is done for making the music festival successful and noteworthy. As stated by Gibson &
Connell (2016), the music festivals are managed with the aim of creating awareness among
the people and at the same time, put efforts towards sustainability management by benefiting
the society as well as the community at large. The shift in power and economy have resulted
in higher level of inequity along with economic issues that have been experienced and also
resulted in affecting the ecosystems, which affected climatic change and weather conditions
too. The music festivals are managed to develop human connection and at the same time,
overcome the challenges related to sustainability management along with creation of
awareness regarding the management of renewable and natural resources required to deal

EVENT MANAGEMENT
with the environmental crisis situations whenever required (Norton, Zacher & Ashkanasy,
2014).
Not only does the music event named Coachella 2020 promote music, but
also has managed positive values and beliefs within the society, which has
strengthened the collective community to put efforts for the management of
sustainability. This has aroused interests among the people regarding their love
for music and at the same time, encouraged them to manage sustainability Values
and beliefs required to create positive impacts on the environment too. In terms
of management of sustainability and corporate social responsibilities towards the
community. Andersson & Lundberg (2013) argued the fact that the music events
like Coachella 2020 could create positive outcomes within the society by
forming a better and sustainable world through supporting of development of
economy along with the scopes and opportunities for higher revenue generation
(Andersson & Lundberg, 2013). As it could be seen from the arguments made by
Quinn (2013), the music events would bring various scopes and opportunities
with the help of supporting the urban renewal and at the same time, increased the
tourism activities, furthermore, might create better job opportunities along with
positive commercial outcomes too (Quinn 2013). In terms of sustainability
management, the music events hosted by popular and renowned music artists
should boost the diverse culture of the place and preserve the social capital of
the place, thereby, led to the development of resources within the community,
celebration for the public and high level of cohesiveness ( Lockstone et al.,
2013).
On the contrary, Ballantyne, Ballantyne & Packer (2014), the music festivals could
help in managing the societal values and beliefs, furthermore, support the community’s

wellbeing by making people aware of adopting sustainable behaviours to promote
environmental stewardship and preserve the natural resources and ecological balance too.
While arranging the event, there would be involvement of multiple stakeholders, who also
tend to be somewhat influenced by the event, directly or indirectly. For example, the
suppliers of raw materials and resources, i.e., the equipment and machineries required during
the event, could get more scopes for strengthening with the sponsors and manager of the
entire event to provide supplies while arranging the event. The shareholders or investors are
also provided with greater opportunities to make investments, furthermore, ensure raising the
working capital (Raj, Walters & Rashid, 2017). As the music event is based on a large scale,
so the shareholders would be highly benefited considering the fact that they would get great
opportunity to make investments and expect good rate of return too. There would be more
employment scopes for the local people as well as the sponsors to get involved during the
event management. The customers or end users are the people who would visit the even to
gain an enjoyable music experience while attending the event. They would make purchase of
tickets, which should allow them to go to the venue and listen to music, enjoy and remain
joyful while on the other hand, the entire event would bring a large portion of the revenue
based on the tickets purchased by the clients (Danaher et al., 2014).
As stated by Mair, Whitford & Mackellar (2013), in spite of the positive impacts that
might be created, there could also be negative impacts created such as the consumption of
huge amount of energy, water, food as well as result in depletion of natural resources in the
adjourning areas. There would also be generate of huge amounts of wastes and emissions of
carbon would tend to remain high while the local people might be affected due to the high
decibel of noise and sometimes due to not being focused on cultural adaptation in Indio
(Coachella.com, 2019).

Discussion and conclusion
The sustainability management strategies are critical to the success of the music event
considering the maintenance of positive environment impact as well as allow the community
and environment to get benefited largely. Considering the huge number of people
participating the music event, i.e., Coachella, the event management individuals must
consider the environmental, economic and social dimensions, furthermore, prioritise on the
Triple Bottom Line including the people, profit and planet. To ensure creation of social
impacts that tend to be positive, the music event could focus on preventing discrimination
based on the age, sex, race, religion, colour or ethnicity (Anderton, 2015). The management
strategies could enable the company to move towards sustainability and at the same time,

remain committed to efforts that could contribute largely to the betterment of the Coachella
Valley.
Considering the positive impacts including the social, economic and environmental
impacts, it is to believe that the various stakeholders would also be benefited. As the
shareholders or investors would make significant amount of investments on the music event,
they would expect good amount of return on the investments made by them while the
suppliers involved in the event would also, be benefited as the supplies provided by them
would make the event happening as well as provide them with good amount of money for the
materials and resources delivered by them. Moreover, with the music event happening in
Indio, there would be better employment growth scopes and opportunities for people,
especially the local people from nearby places to open shops nearby the event’s location for
ensuring that the visitors are provided with various amenities too (Sharma et al., 2013). The
hotel owners would also be able to promote tourism and travel activities, furthermore, create
convenience for the people visiting the location to get accommodation facilities as well as get
necessary travel related facilities to visit the location much more easily. This is how the
stakeholders would be benefited and also the event could be successful in terms of financial
performance delivered along with management of sustainability too (Coachella.com, 2019).
The event should also partner with the Global Inheritance for promoting various
campaigns and initiatives required to reduce the harmful impact that might be created on the
environment as a whole. The wastes have been recycled while the reusable bottles should be
used considering the sustainability management aspect in mind for ensuring that lesser wastes
are generated during the music event. The music event partnered with the charities such as
LovingAllAnimals, The Painted Turtle, Coachella Valley Horse Rescue, etc (Kruger &
Saayman, 2016). to make sure that the revenue generated from the event are provided to these
