The main duty of sports coaches is to assist the athletes and to help them develop to their best
capacity as well as potential. The main duty of the job is to train the athletes in their
respective sport by keeping a track and analyzing their game and their performances. The
duty of the coach is to encourage the athletes and also help in instructing and helping to
develop relevant skills to ace in the sport. The duty of the coach is also to guide the athletes
in their life as well as the sport they have chosen for themselves.
A sports coach preferably needs to have a Bachelor’s degree in coaching of any sport and
should pass 10+2 with minimum 50% marks and should preferable have physical education
in their curriculum. The sports coach needs to have an experience of minimum 2 years before
joining a permanent job.
There are some basic skills a sports coach must have which are the following:
Keen enthusiasm and interest in sports
Efficient communication skills
Motivate the performance of a person and inspire confidence
Understand and analyze performance and problems

Coaches are mostly seen as mentors and role models for the players who work hard and help
athletes and sports teams to win, support them when they lose and share the happiness of
participation.
A good and efficient coach generally goes beyond physical training and helps in development
of resilience, confidence, social participation and life skills.
Marlene Matthews had won the bronze medal in the year 1956 in the Melbourne Olympic
Games in both the 100m and the 200m events and ad become popular for setting the world
record for the 100 yard sprint in 10.3 seconds. She had then come up with her own club and
then had been appointed as the athletics coach with Rothman Sports Foundation. She had
become the pioneer and had created a path for the future female sports administrators and
coaches. She had helped in motivating and enhancing the performance of the athletes and had
contributed to both their professional as well as personal development which helped her in
gaining awards and become the Member of the Order of Australia in the year 197 and also an
Officer of the Order of Australia in the year 1999 (The Conversation, 2016).
The job of a sports coach does not only resort to training athletes and motivating them but has
a huge role to play in sports management. The major functions of sports coach is to plan,
organize, often staff and select athletes, direct and control the management to some extent as
well which helps in sports management and helps in the functioning of various areas keeping
in mind the laws and the ethics that are laid down by the government and the committee
which ensures in building a positive team and athletes.
There are many principles of a sports coach like the coaching spirit where it can be seen that
how the coach has enthusiasm to ensure the positive growth and development of the athletes

in terms of their performance as well as their outlook towards their future and life. The other
is building a positive trust and relationship where it is the responsibility of the coach to build
trust not only between them and the athletes but also among the teams to facilitate teamwork
which helps massively during the games. The other principle is intuition and listening where
the job of the coach is to listen to the issues of the athletes and help them in resolving their
issues and provide them with suitable solutions which will help them in overcoming the
issues and grow. The other principle of the coach is to provide feedback and awareness. This
is highly important as it is important for the athletes to know about their own performance
and get feedbacks so that they become aware of their own performance and can rectify and
work hard that will help them in improving their performance and work hard towards
achieving perfection which help in their game and make them more articulate and achieve a
sense of their own playing and work towards progress (Milistetd et al, 2017). The last and
one of the most important is to create an action plan where they need to set up a plan so that
the athletes can work on achieving the goals and mission that will help them in achieving
great results and develop skills necessary to play the game in a right manner.

which will help them in improving them in their game. They act as an educator and not only
educate them with the skills required for the sports but also teach them the basic things like
fitness and discipline which play a huge role in the life of a sportsman. The sports coach
conduct the bets training activities that help athletes develop the skills that is essential for
playing the sport and acing the sport which helps in bringing huge rewards to both the sports
coach as well as the athletes.
The sports coach does not only act as a strict educator and training but also acts as a friend
which helps in building a positive relationship and trust and encourages the athletes to share
personal as well as professional problems (Resnick, 2018). This helps in releasing stress and
help the athletes in concentrating to the training activities efficiently which helps them in
developing the necessary and essential skills which is required to play the sport in an efficient
manner and being perfect in that sport as well.
The sports coach also plays the role of an innovator who ensures that he develops unique and
new strategies, practices that are personalized and also helps in coming up with different
