The fantasy to hear and experience the magic of sound is still a dream for those who are
unable to hear like me. Then I got a magic device called ‘cochlear implant’. It is a small
microelectronic tool that helps to deliver a sensation of sound to a deaf individual
(www.nidcd.nih.gov, 2016). The transplant is usually done by planting an external device behind
the ear and surgically setting another device under the skin.
Children and grownups who are hard of hearing can be considered for cochlear implants.
Some people who have missed most of their audible range can also be benefitted from cochlear
implants in a prior stage of their life (Firszt et al., 2018). Surgical attachments are almost safe.
An added concern is to understand the vibrations created by an implant. This is a time taking
process and also needs patience and practice. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists are
of great help in this regard.
The popularity of the cochlear implant has an immense effect on the deaf children to
attain vocal language proficiency (Geers et al., 2017). These children were previously depended
on sign language for communication. Education choices in this regard include conventional or
special therapy program in the subjects of speech, sign and language in the special or normal
school for deaf children. An early implant for deaf children helps in the growth of their oral
language expertise in respect of other children with hearing aids.
Thus it can be concluded from the above discussion, that cochlear implant eradicates the
difference between a normal and a disabled person and also help people like me in experiencing
the beauty of different sound in their lifetime.
