The three key principles for writing (reader-centeredness, usability, and
persuasiveness) are important concepts that every writer should consider when producing
a new text. It allows authors to organize their thoughts and write a compelling and
assertive work that engages readers. For this assignment, an article about Australian
coffee consumption will be analyzed focusing on the three concepts. Each principle will be
discussed separately and both positive and negative aspects of the article will be
reviewed.
i) Reader - Centeredness
In the current article, there is evidence that the authors have identified
their audience effectively and have realized the positive attitude towards the
subject. With this knowledge, the authors focus on delivering an informative
article that engages the reader by shifting between different perspectives. They
approach the collected data in a dynamic manner that allow the audience to
value the resources that are included in the article.
However, there are also some flaws regarding its reader-centeredness. The
pacing is uneven, which may lead the reader to lose interest. Similarly, the use
of informal language could alienate some audiences, causing disregard of the
valuable data in the body of the text because of the introduction it has.
ii) Usability
Aligning with the past concept, the authors identify their public so
assertedly that they focus on elaborating an informative article that may serve
different purposes for different readers, as reference for academics or as
interesting facts for hobbyists. The composition provides a wide range of data
condensed in a graph that is easily understood and interpreted. The authors
also add sections in bold headings that highlight several different ways to
analyze the statistics, emphasizing the usefulness of the recollected
information.
Nonetheless, the article has some shortcomings such as the title, which is
barely informative and could be improved by adding a descriptive part to
appeal to a larger audience. Also, the introduction to the text does not convey

its importance in a convincing way because the authors try to relate to the
reader in an informal manner, undermining the content.
However, there is a significant mistake by the authors when they fail to
consider the different channels that are available for readers. For mobile users,
the graph is very difficult to read. This significantly diminishes the usability of
the article and can even have unexpected consequences due to poor user
experience.
iii) Persuasiveness
The article persuades the audience by providing alluring details on an
interesting topic, that is reinforced by comparing and highlighting recollected
data throughout different sections. By doing so, the authors assert credibility
and transmit confidence to the reader. Additionally, the graphic representation
of the information invites readers to invest their attention to the article.
A weakness evidenced in the text is that the authors assume their company
and services are well known by the reader. They place some links for the user
to learn more about them, but this will only distract the reader from the initial
content. Additionally, the active voice is also rarely used assertively when
comparing the data because the authors are careful to assure the results of
their information.
Overall, the article is well written with good examples of each of the three key
principles. It approaches an interesting subject and expands the readers’ knowledge by
presenting valuable data and breaking it down in an engaging way. The intended audience
is not clear, because the article has different styles that range from an informal
introduction to a sales pitch at the end. Albeit, the general manner that the article is
written allows the company to promote its services while delivering a very entertaining
article.
