AI Summary
This document provides a comprehensive solution to a network routing and switching assignment (COIT20261) from Term 1, 2019. The assignment focuses on demonstrating knowledge of routing concepts. The solution includes definitions of autonomous systems, inter-domain routing, and intra-domain routing, as explained by different sources. It presents a comparison between BGP and OSPF, highlighting their differences in convergence time, network design, and algorithms used. The solution emphasizes the need for diverse routing protocols and provides a detailed breakdown of the assignment questions. The document also includes the student's answers, marking criteria, and references to support the analysis and arguments presented.

ANSWER TEMPLATE ASSIGNMENT TWO
Question 3: (10 marks)
a) Mazal says an autonomous system refers to the collection of a
networked system whose management or administration is under one
roof. That is to say, a myriad of networks being monitored by a single
administrator or management. An example of an autonomous system is
the ISPs who have the task of monitoring the network of their clients
who are many in number. BGP protocol is the algorithm used in
forwarding of packets within an autonomous system (Mazal, 2018).

b) Bonaventure gives a description of inter-domain routing as the
networked system in which two or more networks having different
routing protocols are able to communicate to each other. Take for
example you network MN in your building and it uses OSPF routing
protocol. Under the same building you have another network XY whose
routing protocol is EIGRP, when these two networks are able to
communicate, we call this inter-domain routing. BGP is an example of
routing protocol that supports inter-domain routing (Bonaventure, 2019).

c) Empson explains intra-domain routing as a scenario whereby having two
or more networks whose routing protocol is the same and they are able
to communicate to one another. Routing protocols which can implement
this type of routing include but are not limited to OSPF, RIP, EIGRP etc.

d) We compare BGP and OSPF
BGP OSPF
This is an external gateway OSPF is an internal gateway
protocol
BGP has slow convergence time Has a fast convergence time.
BGP is a meshed kind of network
design
OSPF is a kind of hierarchical
network design
Use best path algorithm Uses Dijkstra algorithm
The similarity between the two is that they both support VLSM routing.

e) In the world of computing today, there are millions of millions
networks, these networks require different routing protocols on the basis
of user requirements. This therefore justifies why we would require to
have different protocols for both inter-domain routing and intra-domain
