Introduction
Health consumer and nurse collaborative work is related to partnership and relationship
between them, which focus on the healthy outcome of the health consumer. The collaboration is
established when the nurse and health consumer work together as an effective team and
exchange their views and concern for the promotion of wellbeing (Supper et al. 2015). Mental
health is defined as the situation where the person is in the state of depression, stress and anxiety.
The mental disorder can be developed in any stage of life, which is reported to have adverse
effect on the physical health and their wellbeing (Happell et al. 2018). The collaborative mental
health nursing practice in the area of health care is essential aspect which addresses the need and
requirement of the mental health consumer. The therapeutic relationship can be defined as the
collaborative work and helping relationship that is grounded on respect (Zugai, Stein-Parbury &
Roche 2015). Therefore the paper aims to critically analyze the nursing practice related to
collaborative mental health by concentrating on the practical experience of the mental health
consumer. The paper helps to acknowledge the importance of understanding and gaining
knowledge about the consumer's involvement of living with the effect of the mental health issue.
Part 2- (I) Discussion
The collaboration among the nurse and consumer is an important parameter to provide
effective care to the patient and promote their wellbeing. According to the context of mental
health, the collaborative work by the health nurse and health consumer embrace the active
connection and participation of both the service user and families (Regan, Laschinger & Wong
2016). The central concept of the collaborative relationship lies in the competency and capability
of the nurse in listening, respecting and valuing the perspective of the mental health consumer. It

is noted that therapeutic relationship is an essential sort of collaborative work which highlights
the trust, empathy, communication, respect, care and empowerment in nursing practice.
Mental illness major rising matters in the growing population which people may develop
in their course of life. People living with mental illness are reported to show symptoms of
depression, anxiety and stress. It is indicated in the study of Wilson, Hutchinson and Hurley
(2017) that mental illness deteriorates the life of the person, impacting their both physical and
mental health. The collaboration between the nurse and health consumer work in partnership,
whose principal aim is to bring positive consumer outcomes. This kind of partnership is enclosed
by the therapeutic relationship which makes use of effective communication. The ability of the
nurse to comprehend the concern and living and practical experience of the mental health
consumer, make them capable of building a collaborative relationship. However, it is evident
from the study of Isobel and Delgado (2018) that effective collaboration can be formed when the
consumer understands and acknowledge the collaborative work by the nurse. The development
of the collaborative work when they execute their respective role as a multidisciplinary team
(Stewart, Crozier & Wheeler 2016).
The need to know the practical experience of the mental health consumer gives an insight
to the nurse regarding the area which requires effective care. It is reported in the study of Ae-
Ngibise et al. (2015) that the mental health consumer undergoes emotional trauma which harms
their physical health. To develop a collaborative relationship, there is a need by the mental nurse
to gain a consideration of the live experience of the mental health patient. From the nursing and
midwifery council of board standards of the registered, the standard number 2 highlights that the
health care consumer is the expert of the personal life and they better know their how the mental
disorder is affecting them (Sockalingam et al. 2019). Hence, to see the effect of the mental

illness in their life, the nurse is responsible for understanding their living experience. The
collaboration among the mental health nurse and mental health consumer requires effective
communication to recognize the belief and feeling of the health care consumer. When the mental
health care nurse addresses the influence of the mental illness, they would know the ground that
requires care that will bring wellbeing of the patient.
In the combined work of the nurse and health patient the concept of individuality, respect
and autonomy is the essential element to be maintained by the nurse to advance an understanding
of the involvement of the health consumer of their life. It is reported in the study of Cardiff,
McCormack and McCance (2018) that mentally ill person may have past experience which has
resulted in the emergence of mental disorder, for example, loss of loved ones or financial loss.
The study of Osborn and Stein (2016) has reported that in collaborative work of therapeutic
relationship, both the people have experience and they should be expertise to develop a
successful relationship. Working in partnership, mainly focus on person-centred care. The study
of Cardiff, McCormack and McCance (2018) has demonstrated that in person-centred care, the
view and desire of the person being cared of are respected and valued to promote the wellness of
the person. The concept is an integral part of the nurse and mental patient collaborative work. In
support of person-centred care Brown and Hurley (2018) have suggested that to establish person-
centred care in the therapeutic relationship, it is of major significance for nurse to acknowledge
the impact of mental disorder in their life. Therefore, to work collaboratively, the nurse has to
assess the daily practical experience of the mental health consumer to know the seriousness of
the issue. The nurse would be able to understand the health care consumer, through which they
can better execute their role and develop a successful relationship with them (Lynch et al. 2018).
Hence, it can be said that the mental health nurse must advance an adequate knowledge of the

living experience of health care consumer to develop successful collaborative nurse and
consumer relationship (Perlman et al. 2017).
Part 2 (II) Reflection
I have a live experience with mental health patient name Mary Jane which has given me
an insight into my weak areas of nursing practice which needs improvement and development.
While I was involved in the care of a mentally ill patient, I have analyzed that my
communication skill is weak, due to which I failed to develop a collaborative therapeutic
relationship. The patient was 59 years old lady name Mary Jane, who has lost her relative and
family in a car accident. She was reported with dementia for five years, and with such a tragic
accident, she has developed various mental health complication. She uses to hallucinate the
things and is tearful most of the time. The patient was personally attached to her seven years
granddaughter, who also died in the accident. She was badly affected by it, and she was reported
with chronic depression, anxiety and stress. I used to take care of Mrs. Jane with eating, daily
living activities and providing supportive care. I used to communicate with her, but she does not
give any positive response. I used to ask about her past life and the problem she is facing, but I
failed to assess any knowledge about the effect of the mental illness and disorder on her. My
communication skill is poor so I was unable to show empathy to her situation and develop a
collaborative relationship. It is evident from the study of Larkin, Boden and Newton (2015) that
consumer recognized the collaborative work as the one to one relationship, and it is the gateway
to effective communication. The mental health consumer believes that the therapeutic
relationship focused on helping them to return to their healthy life. They are also in agreement
that collaboration is the independent process where the skills of communication are fair, open,
truthful and respectful. Therefore, from my above evident, it can be said that my way of

communication with the patient was not effective enough and hence she has not developed any
trust to the care I was giving to her. Therefore, I need to improve my communication skill in my
practice that can enable me to work in association with the mental health patient. I was unable to
form a therapeutic relationship with her. Though I tried to ask her concern and show respect,
however, I fail to develop trust in the relationship. The primary reason was poor communication
skill. I did not use to listen to her as she always hallucinates things, tends to forget thing easily
and keep murmuring some chants. I did nit urge to ask probing questions and validate the
emotional experience of her. These are the primary reason, due to which I failed to develop
collaborative nurse and consumer relationship. From the study of Lee, Huh and Reigeluth
(2015), it was analyzed that establishing a collaborative relationship is a challenging process for
the nurse with the mental health consumer. They need to have confidence and communication
skill to be receptive to the need of the consumer. By the mean of effective communication, the
nurse would be able to analyse the demand and concern of the patient, which is pre-requisite for
successful collaborative work. Haruta et al. (2018) have suggested that collaboration is the
variable process which is framed by effective communication. They can assess the belief and
feeling of the consumer by the mean of listening and discussing the area of concern, and it is the
major part of collaborative work (Foronda, MacWilliams & McArthur 2016). Therefore, I need
to work on my communication skill for collaborative work.
I will engage in teaching and training process where I will acquire the skill of
communication. I will take the help of my senior nurse in learning the fundamental skills.
Further, I will also take part in practical experience under the supervision of the senior nurse
manager and make a note of the ways they use to communicate with the mental health patient. I
will use the critical learning while taking care of the mentally ill patient to examine its

effectiveness. Moreover, I will evaluate the evidence-based practice of collaborative work and
the use of communication skill by reviewing the research journals. This will help me to
understand different successful ways of communication which will also assist me in developing
collaborative work with the consumer.
Conclusion
Lastly, the paper concludes by saying that that collaborative work is dependent on the
nurse having knowledge and skills for a successful relationship. It also requires the consumer to
have the capability to work in a cooperative way. The collaboration between the mental nurse
and health consumer is structured on mutual trust, respect and effective communication. It also
requires that nurse must assess the life of mental health consumer, through which they can
understand the effect and accordingly develop a care plan in the collaborative work. It can also
be said that nursing skill of communication is the crucial part in developing a collaborative
therapeutic relationship. It will help the nurse to know their living experience and area of
concern that needs consideration.
