COMMUNICATION BARRIERS AND ROLE OF CULTURE IN COMMUNICATION
OVERVIEW
Despite terrorist attack Sri Lanka has been one of the popular choice of
tourists. There is need to effectively promote the opening of new resort
so that both local and international tourists can get assure of the security
concerns and the quality of services. It is very essential for the
organisation to provide appropriate training to staff members so that all
security procedures are followed and safety of the guests is not
compromised. However, this is not possible without support and
cooperation from the guests. Thus, organisation must identify various
communication and cultural barriers so that a proper coordination can be
established between service providers and users.
Barriers to effective communication
There are several factors which influences the effectiveness of
communication. The language barrier has been one of the key
barrier which affects the information flow. Since the hospitality
industry consist of users and service providers from different
cultures it is very obvious to face the communication issues due to
culture, language and emotional barriers.
Further barriers such as noise, technical errors in communication
devices can also act as barriers to effective communication.
Another critical challenge for the proposed resort is to develop an
effective organisational structure. The ineffective organisational
hierarchy often makes it hard for the individuals to easily
communicate with the management and leaders. It not only
influences the service quality but can also affect the operational
efficiency of the individuals.

barrier. The staff members of the resort must be provided training
for multiple foreign languages so that they can communicate and
understand the most frequently used languages. In resorts sign
boards or the maps must be used so that guest does not find it
difficult to find services.
The use of sign language and non-verbal communication along
with the verbal methods can help to overcome the linguistic or
cultural barriers. The organisation must also emphasis on routine
maintenance of communication devices so that they can work
properly and are not affected by noise or any kind of technical
errors.
Another strategy for enhancing communication is that
organisation culture must be developed in a way such that
individuals can easily interact with each others and provide
respect to the diverse cultural elements.
