INTRODUCTION
This report includes discussion about various theories of organisational communication
and evaluation of various communication barriers faced by Learn English UK. This report
provides effective strategies to eliminate communication barriers from respective university in
order to construct healthy environment for development of each student
MAIN BODY
Theories of organisational communication
Organisational communication refers to flow of information within an enterprise and
focuses on maintenance of proper communication channels to accomplish common goals of the
organisation and implement policies effectively. Organisational communication involves
interaction with working members of the organisation and external individuals and enterprises
(Malof, 2018) . Effective organisational communication plays an important role in perpetual
growth of an enterprise as smooth functioning of various operations is dependent on constructive
communication between each employee .
Several theories of organisational communication are provided below:
Fixed structures theory: According to this theory, which was developed by
organisational theorist Max Webber every organisation has a inflexible predefined structure and
each member of the organisation has distinct roles and responsibilities. The hierarchical structure
of an organisation along with specific functions associated with each individual employee allow
effective flow of information and discourage any amount of miscommunication (Alicja and
Katarzyna, 2018) . This theory states that efficient communication is possible because each
individual is given specific responsibilities which matches their capabilities and allows the
organisation to accomplish their goals swiftly and effectively. This theory is applicable in
organisations with clearly visible chain of command and the organisational communication
depends upon every employee understanding their position in company hierarchy (Chen and
Agrawal, 2017).
Organisational control theory: This theory focuses on identification of employees with a
portion of an organisation and states that interaction between members of an organisation plays
a significant role in functioning of various operations .This process of identification allows the
business entity to control operations of the enterprise in elusive manner and are able to bring

desired changes without facing strong dissent from workforce of the organisation (Davis, 2016) .
This theory was created by Tompkins and Cheney and argues that defined rules and regulations
are not as effective in maintaining power when compared with employee association with
organisational values and impact of larger vision of the organisation on their employees.
Managerialism theory: This theory was formed by Stanley Deetz and takes into
consideration, organisations which have moved past the bureaucratic model and have political
interests. This theory is based on four ways in which organisational leaders are able to
communicate decisions. These factors include strategy, consent,involvement and participation
(Donato, Spencer and Arthur-Kelly, 2018). This theory puts special emphasis on managerial
functions along with focus on collaborative efforts within an organisation .This theory examines
the effects of democratic ambitions within an organisation and the actions of people with power
of an organisation and positions functions and responsibilities of a manager as force which has
significant impact on interactions within an organisation. The main elements of organisational
communication in network based organisation are positional relational and cultural. The
positional element is associated with structure of the organisation and about hierarchy present in
the organisation while the relation element is based on formation of relationship between
employees. The cultural element consists of various rituals, assumptions and unspoken rules of
the organisation which are acknowledged by every employee.
Evaluation of communication barriers present at Learn English UK
Existence of effective communication channels at a university is contributing factor in
development and growth their students. Learn English UK is facing various communication
barriers which are obstructing effective flow of information at the university which are evaluated
below:
Noise pollution: Learn English UK is located in one of the busiest areas of the city with
presence loud traffic outside the university campus everyday. Such high presence of noise
pollution reduces proper flow of information as students and lecturers are distracted by blaring
noise coming from the traffic present outside the university (Engström and Stehn, 2016) .Noise
pollution reduces the students memorising abilities and extended exposure to noise pollution
leads to the development of physical and psychological disorders such as loss of hearing ability.
This daily problem faced by the students is a giant obstacle in their path towards achieving
success by gaining knowledge from university faculty.

Physical barrier: The respective university building lacks proper isolation and does not
have technology reduces the impact of outside environment such as harsh weather on activities
which are conducted at indoor university grounds (Ghnayiem, 2018) .Adverse weather
conditions make students uncomfortable and reduce concentration of students from lectures. The
professors and other faculty present at the university are physically impacted by extreme cold or
warm atmospheric conditions, and this affects their teaching abilities and stops effective
exchange of information, ideas and opinions between teachers and students. Students face
obstacles in their continuous growth due to presence of physical communication barriers.
Cultural barrier: The respective university has culturally diverse students in their
campus. This introduces a communication barrier between students from different culture as they
face difficulties in in blending themselves with cultural traditions and social norms of the
University. This is even more challenging for international students as their culture is vastly
different from British culture, such students face communication barriers while interacting with
their peers and teaching staff, this ceases the overall academic growth of the students long with
absence of personality development that is needed to succeed in their future endeavours.
Technical factor: The respective university does not have good Wi-Fi facilities which is
essential for students as it not only gives them easy access to valuable information about their
academic subjects but also contact their families easily and swiftly. The absence of advanced
Wi-Fi network does not allow the students to contact their teachers, family members and peers in
affordable manner (Leyshon, 2020) .This is major obstacle in communication and discourages
students from achieving their full potential.
Strategies adopted by the university to eliminate communication barriers.
It is important for Learn English UK to remove all communication barriers from their
university in order to form a healthy learning environment where students are able to effectively
exchange their opinions and develop various academic skills. Various strategies that need to be
implemented by Learn English UK are provided below:
Increase cultural activities: The respective university should introduce policies which
encourage students from different cultures to share their ideas and needs to arrange various
cultural activities which helps them understand cultural traditions of international students
(Malof, 2018). These cultural programmes should be modified every month according to specific

cultural traditions of student group which is being represented on that particular month. This will
increase effective communication between students from different cultural backgrounds.
Enhance technology: The respective university should invest in improving their
technology which includes enhancing their Wi-Fi network (Kong and Karahalios, 2020). The
improved Wi-Fi network at the university needs to give their students easy access to fast internet
services with proper security measures . This will help the students consent with their families
and classmates easily. The organisation should invest in developing proper communication
channels on internet by building accessible website and make their social media handle which
connects all the students from university and allows the institution to give major announcements
about various events swiftly to all the students and members of the staff.
Improve infrastructure: The infrastructure of the university should be improved and
proper ventilation channels to reduce outside noise should be implemented (Davis, 2016). Learn
English UK should invest in upgrading their university with air conditioning and heating system
which maintains comfortable temperature inside the classroom during adverse weather
conditions. Improvement in infrastructure of the university will allow the students to focus at
their lecturers and reduce external disturbance like impact of extreme weather or noise
pollution .
Increase group activities: The university needs to introduce group based presentations
and projects in their curriculum. This builds teamwork abilities between students and teaches
them both verbal and non verbal communication skill that help them succeed later in their life.
As the students are required to work and complete their tasks in groups, they form strong
relationships with each other and learn about various social cues which enhance their
communication skills. Completing group presentations requires the students to present their
work in front of their teacher in creative ways, this activity increases communication between
students and teachers and gives the teacher information about each students academic
development along with progress related to their communication skills (Chen and Agrawal,
2017). The teacher is able to push the students in the right direction after gathering information
about their communication abilities
Build feedback systems: The respective university should focus on investing in
constructing communication channels which connect every student to the highest administrative
authority and allow the students to give feedbacks suggestions about various events conducted at

the university. This will enhance communication between students, give the students a platform
to present their ideas, increase their participation in various activities and improve student-
teacher engagement.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it is determined that various communication barriers such as noise
pollution and cultural differences hamper continuous development of students. It is analysed that
implementation of regular cultural programs at the university campus along with construction of
feedback systems help the university eliminate communication barriers and improve learning
abilities of their students.
