Communication is process of exchange of information from sender to
receiver. It includes encoding and decoding of message from sender to
receiver. This process is done via a communication channel.
Barriers to effective communication
In communication there are many barriers which occurs. Due to
these it highly affect on message sent and received. Thus, barriers are
described as below :
Psychological barriers- they are those barriers in which people might
have some psychological problems such as depression, fear, anxiety,
etc. So, due to which they might be not able to express their feelings
openly.
Emotional barriers – it is a barrier in which people have strong IQ
level will be effectively able to communicate. But there are some who
might not mature and do not show enough emotions. Hence, this act as
barrier in communication.
Cultural barriers- it is popular barrier in it. Here, different cultural
people speak different language, so it might be difficult to understand
other person message.
Physical barriers - they are most common barriers and can be
overcome easily. It includes barriers such as noise, close hall, faulty
tool of communication, etc. so, in M&S as well these barriers may
occur.
Organisational structure barriers- these exist within organisation as there
might not be proper transparency in communication process. Besides
that, structure might be complex as well. so, it is also a barrier in it.

Strategies for overcoming communication barriers
It is necessary to overcome barriers so that communication can be done in
effective way. Besides that, message is sent and delivered properly. Therefore,
strategies are defined as below
Use of simple language - here, language used can be simple with clear words
meaning in it. there should not be use of jargons and ambiguous words.
Elimination of noise levels- the noise levels that can interrupt communication
must be identified and then eliminated. It will enable in overcoming physical
barriers.
Simple organisation structure- the structure can be made simple and flexible so that
employees can easily communicate with one another and their superiors. More
simple structure more effective is communication.
Take proper feedback- this can be applied in which feedback is taken from receiver
that whether he or she is able to understand message sent or not.
Proper selection of channel- the mode of communication selected must be
according to situation and message content.

Importance of cultural awareness
Cultural awareness refers to understanding of cultural
diversity, ethics, values, etc. shared by other people. it is
important to be aware about other culture so that it leads to
decrease in conflicts within M&S. When people understand
and gain about beliefs, ethics values etc. followed they respect
them. This enable them to get to know about background,
ethics, etc. being included within culture. Alongside, cultural
awareness helps in taking effective decisions through cross
culture. Therefore, in M&S as well diversified people work so
they need to be aware about each other culture. It will result in
working in team in efficient way and creating bond with one
another. Besides that, when people gain about culture they
maintain its dignity and respect it. Hence, it leads to creating
positive environment within organisation. Also, there is no
miscommunication occur regarding culture. Thus, this is
importance of cultural awareness.
