Business communication can be defined as the process of sharing information among a
group of individuals in or out side of an organisation so that commercial benefits could be
acquired. Manager of Mr. Fishy which is a fish and chips restaurant in Borough Market near by
London Bridge Station is being asked to create a poster regarding communication barriers and
strategies to overcome them and spread cultural awareness.
Communication barriers: There are various barriers of communication which are
affecting effective communication between British and non British staff members of Mr. Fishy.
Some of them are highlighted below:
Perceptual barriers: It is based upon different elements such as values, perception,
attitude and experience of the people who are interacting with each other and having
conflicts.
Emotional barriers: Such types of barriers are related with mindset of individuals who
are communicating with each other. The people with this type of barrier tend to be highly
cautious, insecure and reserved (Bargiela-Chiappini and Nickerson, 2014).
Cultural barriers: Such types of barriers may take place when people from different
cultures are not able to understand customs of each other while interacting.
Language barriers: This type of barrier arises when two or more people who are
involved in an interaction and not able to understand each other's language.
All the above described barriers are creating conflicts among British and non British
employees of Mr Fishy. In order to overcome all of them and show cultural awareness following
strategies could be implemented:
Communicating only what is needed: In order to overcome the communication barriers
it is very important for staff members of Mr. Fishy to communicate the information
which is required. If there is no need of internation then they should ignore it. With the
help of it the factors which are creating conflicts could be ignored.
Avoiding slang: Casual language is considered as a fun element which is good for
friends while working professionally it should be avoided by individuals. With the help
of it professionalism could be established and possibility of perceptual and language
barriers could be reduced.

Always be aware of cultural differences: For all the employees in Fishy it is very
important to be aware of differences in cultural of them. It can help to reduce cultural
barriers and show cultural awareness for each other's customs.
Respecting point of view of others: In order to overcome communication barriers it is
very important for British and Non British employees of Mr. Fishy it is very important to
respect point of views of each other. With the help of conflicts could be reduced and
effective communication could be established (Moshiri and Cardon, 2014).
From the above analysis it has been assessed that in order to conduct business
communication successfully it is very important for companies to adopt effective strategies so
that barriers such as language, perception, culture etc. could be ignored. It can also help all the
staff members to be aware of culture of all the colleagues.
