INTRODUCTION
Business Communication is defined as the exchanging some information in the form of
communication process in order to meet firm’s objectives and goals to achieve profits for an
organization (Business Communication: Definition, Types, Examples, Importance, Methods,
Functions, 2020). LearnEnglishUK is a school based in London where international students
study the English language. But students are facing some communication problems like hearing
problem due to heavy traffic area, old buildings results in cold to the students, weak Wi-Fi signal
and less interaction among British society. The following discussion is based on the challenges
and barriers to effective communication, strategies to overcome those barriers and importance of
cultural awareness.

MAIN BODY
Common challenges and barriers to effective communication
 Psychological barriers: These are the barriers which are related to mental or internal
body of the person. In context of LearnEnglishUK, these challenges are associated with
the building problem of a school which results cold to the students ultimately leading to
the diversion of mind from the studies (Dwyer and Hopwood, 2019).
 Emotional barriers: These are the barriers which is related with the emotions of a
person, People who are emotionally weak and cannot handle the situations are considered
as barrier to communication and the people who are emotionally strong can handle the
situations are considered as effective communicator. In context of LearnEnglishUK, due
to the weak Wi-Fi connection, it was becoming difficult for the students to communicate
with their family at home so they do not feel comfortable in studying also.

 Cultural barriers: These are the barriers which are related to the difference in culture of
different people from different cities or countries (Veltsos, 2017). In context of
LearnEnglishUK, students who are studying in the school are from different countries or
places across the world so undoubtedly their cultures can be totally different so it was
becoming difficult for the students to adjust in totally new cultures for a long time.
 Physical barriers: These are the barriers which are related to the physical problems
surrounding the person through which person is unable to concentrate on communication.
In context of LearnEnglishUK, school building is located in a street where most of the

traffics create problems like hearing problem, students are facing the same which results
in lack of concentration on studies.
Effective strategies for overcoming communication barriers Overcome mental stress: It is important to be mentally strong so that cold and fever
could not even affect the students concentration from studies (Oussii and Klibi, 2017).
School should maintain it’s old building walls so that cold must not affect the students
and students must also wear warm clothes so that they could be saved from this challenge
of communication. Emotionally strong: It is essential for the students to be emotionally strong because if
sometimes it would not be possible for the students to communicate at home, they should
not feel weak or homesick, and it is the responsibility of a school also to connect strong
Wi-Fi connection at their place so that students can overcome these barriers of
communication. Building interaction power: It is necessary for the school to look into this issue, it is very
important to interact with other culture people so that students feel comfortable in a
school, school must organize activities and events so that students enjoy living there and
focus on studies and they do not feel any homesickness due to their introvert nature. Strong listening ability: Traffic problem cannot be solved until the location is changed
which is very difficult for the school in a short time (Mayfield and Mayfield, 2017). But
there are other solutions also on which school can work on this barrier and those can be,
school must teach students to empower their listening skills, ask questions frequently if
not understood by students or school must be clear and loud in their speech and voice.

Importance of cultural awareness Deep understanding of other’s beliefs: Culture awareness is important because it helps
the people to understand other people cultures in a very deep manner so that other people
respect’s other’s culture and beliefs (Malyuga, Krouglov and Tomalin, 2018). Strong communication: If people are aware of other people cultures and trends then it
assist a person to communicate strongly with respectful manner to others this leads to
effective communication between different people having different cultures. Good networking: As more and more awareness of variety of cultures of different
people, more interaction would be available which results in strong networking and social
relationship satisfaction among people (Bannier, Pauls and Walter, 2019).
CONCLUSION
It is concluded that communication is very important in one’s life, without strong
communication, life can be difficult to tackle anywhere people go. Although there are various
challenges and barriers to effective communication but solutions are also present to overcome
those efficiently. Moreover, culture awareness is also important for better communication power.
