Sustainability and its significance in modern engineering
Sustainability has been referred as the concept that is used for meeting the requirements of the
present without compromising the ability of meeting the need of the future (Harper, Harper and
Snowden, 2017). The foundation sustainability is found to be based on three pillars that comprise
of environmental, economic and social aspects. These pillars can also be informally termed as
profits, planet and people.
Modern engineering is the concept that majorly comprise of technology but also is concerned
with the advancements and understanding of technological mechanisms and the offerings,
impacts and relevancy of the technology (Yearley, 2014). As sustainability is a contemporary
concept it will be considered as significant for modern engineering business. The following are
some most empirical aspects that will be presenting the significance of sustainability in modern
engineering business:
Environmental sustainability practices will lead the business organization with number of
benefits. Sustainable business is more innovative by nature and that will lead in generation of
offering high quality of products.
Sustainability will offer long run benefits such as better pay for the employees that will allow
improved lives.
Environmental and resource efficiency issues
The daily practices or the operations executed within the workplace and the impacts of same on
environment can be termed as the environmental and resource efficiency issues. These issues
vary as per the nature of the business (Miller, Shemer and Semiat, 2015). And as per the given
scenario Woolworths will be facing the below mentioned issues:

 Over usage of electricity

These are the most common occurring issues that are faced by the business corporation on daily
basis. Wastage of paper is caused while various documentation processes executed on daily basis
such as printing, filling and maintaining various records of entity.
Over consumption of electricity is another issue that will be considered under the list of
environmental and resource efficiency issue list. As electricity is a non-renewable form of energy
and over consumption of the same will have various drastic impacts on environment.
Environmental laws in Australia and Victoria
Australia
Clean energy act 2011: This Act was an act of Australian parliament can also be termed as the
main act in a package of action that established an Australian emission trading scheme (ETS)
(Dunlap and Mertig, 2014). The package of this act was introduced Gillard labor government in
Feb 2011 and was repealed by abort government on 17th July 2014, backdated to 1st July 2014.
Victoria
Environment protection (distribution of landfill levy) regulations 2010: These regulations
specify the process of distribution of Landfill levies with an objective of section 70(6B) of the
Environment Protection Act 1970.
Impact of environmental laws
Environmental laws can be considered as the guidelines that restrict the business organization
from polluting and degrading the environment (Dunlap, 2014). These laws are required to be
adhered by each and every business entity and for doing so the firms are required to make
number of modifications in various operations such as production and competitiveness. For
instance, Woolworths will have to make use of environmental friendly packaging material and
bio-degradable packages. This may lead in incurring of heavy expenses and will be a negative
impact over the business.

Woolworth is a very giant company which operates on retailing products to various customers
who require the goods. Hence, company has multiple lines in which it operates. So, company
must have some or the other plan in order to enhance its growth towards its settled objective.
There are so many plans upon which company can work and be inclined to perform its
environmental campaign which it is going to launch in market. But one way in which it can
contribute to the environmental sustainability of the workplace (Percival, Schroeder, Miller and
Leape, 2017). It can provide the employees a room where they can relax out of work so as to
have a fatigue from the work they are doing. But the employees are supposed to complete their
work. In order to take a break from the work they can have some rest period of 10-15 minutes in
that room. Employees can further have coffee in that scenario as well as they can have some

games which are very much brain storming so as to get back to work with the same energy after
having a break.
Environmental or sustainability issue
Most issue that Woolworth faces is regarding stress of the employees and due to which they are
unable to contribute in the company as they are supposed to. Hence, this concern the fact those
employees tend to leave the job. Further the inclination of such parameter into a system which is
more focused and more stress free which is itself an environmental sustainable campaign as the
employees will be better for long period of time which is important and very much needed for
their lives and their wellbeing. Improvement in the performance of the employees will help the
company to have a outcome to measure the extent of this system.
Improving the environmental performance of your workplace
Similarly Woolworth can have a system for the employees to check upon that if all the work in
the company is working properly or not and by chance if there is any kind of shortcomings that
can be resolved (Laharnar, Perrin, Hanson, Anger and Glass, 2015). A disciplined system so as
to have who has to do what can help the company to reach out to a goal which is not hard to
achieve and can be worked through the company and its people.
Measures of improvement and expected final achievement.
The details of measurement are such that it is helping in enhancing the results and contributing
for the improvement in employee’s performance. The expected final achievement is the overall
growth of company with individual growth for sustainable environment where people want to
work.

There is a huge criticizes upon the kind of environment employees get to work. Hence, to have a
sustainable environment as well as a place to work for the people. This report is being justified.
It is significant for a company like Woolworth to have such system in which it can have better
growth and development opportunities.
