Annotated Bibliography and Critical Analysis: ACC100 Report

The main purpose of the article is to explore violence against women which has become a major
concern in the modern world. The article has performed a textual analysis for collecting adequate
information. It represents that the news media must work as overseers over the wrongdoings in
the world instead of helpers in deteriorating the communal weaknesses. It primarily focuses on
the media exposure of gang rape case in Delhi and the death of a 23-year-old medical learner.
The study demonstrates that the government of the country revised the laws affecting sexual
violence. It is argued that media develop an impression of cases instead of an correct record of
the events. Besides this, the author argued that there should be more research on sex crimes and
violence against women to present accurate information so that the government could take
essential steps. The limitation of the article is that it uses time periods that cover the critical event
in the media. It is a useful source because it provides knowledge regarding violation of the
victim by the media and the culprit. The article is relevant to the issue because it explores the
role of media in covering the brutal murder case of women.

Corrective rape of black African lesbians in South Africa’, African Human Rights Law

The article aims to analyze the legal response of South Africa towards rape amongst black
African lesbians. It focuses on different stories of people who lost their life. Zoliswa was one of
the victims who was brutally murdered in Cape Town because she was lesbian. The study
indicates that lesbians face intolerance, dangers and intimidation that make their life vulnerable.

Moreover, Duduzile was one of the other victims of corrective rape and brutally murdered in a
yard. The minister of women and children strongly condemned the fact and fought against
violence affected the members of the society. The article states that rape, along with brutal
murder invades the rights of women in society. It explores that the court and justice system failed
to determinate the struggle amongst the right to equality and the right to culture in the setting of
counteractive rape. It demonstrates that corrective rape is committed due to intolerance and
prejudice. It is a useful source and relevant to the issue because different events of corrective
rape highlighted and recognized the laws that consider the crime as a hate crime. One of the
limitation of the article is that it focuses mainly on the lesbian community rather than the entire
women community.

The newspaper article is related to the murder case of Aya Maasarwe, who was the student of La
Trobe University in Melbourne. A man named, Codey Herrmann attacked, raped along with
brutally murdered the student in January. The case has generated a wave of anger among the
students of the university and the citizens regarding the increasing rate of violence against
women in Australia. The article claims that women should be free to walk along the streets alone
without any fear. Herrmann was sentenced to prison for 36 years because of the severe crime
committed by him. The article has demonstrated the whole event of the case that Aya was
attacked over midnight by the violent man who struck her to a metal pole before the rape. The
prime minister of Australia considered it as an incredible shocking as well as tragic attack. The
key strength of the article is that it claims that one should not avoid the sexist attitudes in the
society that develop such a violent man and case. It suggests that nothing would change until the
people change themselves based on their thinking and attitude. It is highly relevant to the issue
because it explores the brutal murder case of a student.

The news article states that the media covered the brutally murdered events in a dehumanized
manner; instead, they should focus on the happening or reasons for the case. It demonstrates
concern about the brutal murder case of Tracy Connelly in Melbourne. The report explores that
dehumanizing of another woman through media who was killed by violent man represents that
the country brings no change in the past few years. The media were consistently referring to
Tracy as a prostitute, but she does not deserve this; rather, she needs justice by conducting more
research to know what has happened to her. The author argues that society or media require to
take steps to prevent brutal murder or the people have to wait until the white woman become the
victim. One of the key strengths of the article is that it suggests that there is no classification of
the woman for deserving violence, but the division of good and bad highly influence the media
to report on complicated issues. It is a useful source because it reflects on the facts of how media
present the prostitute woman who was brutally murdered in the report and identify limitations on
the reporting of crimes.
Part B – Critical Analysis
Media plurality is one of the academic concepts or theories that refer to the information
individuals regularly consume, which informs their perspective along with views on the globe
(Kennedy and Sommerfeldt, 2015). The concept is primarily concerned with ensuring that the
people are visible to a wide range of various opinions, information and views from a number of
the source. The academic theory of media plurality also refers to having a variety of perspectives
accessible as well as inspired throughout the media. Besides this, access to a plurality of media
stages has sustained to develop in the period.
Furthermore, the concept can be effectively explained through the news article selected above.
Based on the media plurality concept, it is identified that the media informs the people about a
range of perceptions and views regarding different topics. It is argued that media can provide a
variety of useful information to the people but on the other hand, dehumanize the accurate event
related to the issue. Besides this, the news article of Aya Maasarwe constructs meaning to the
media plurality concept as it informs the people of the country of the brutal murder case of
student and allows them to give their own perceptions as well as opinions on the issue. It is seen

that people show anger about violence towards women in the country that prompt vigil.
Moreover, media has played a vivid role in exploring the issue of violence against women
throughout the nation (Tambini and Labo, 2016). Therefore, the media provides information
regarding the rate of men and women who experienced sexual violence. Media inform that a
large number of students from the overseas country come to Australia for studying and thus, the
government should change laws on sexual crimes.
On the other hand, the news article related to Trace Connelly case reveals the opposite meaning
of media usage in the event. It is argued by Gilmore that media consistently dehumanize the
victim by addressing her as a prostitute. Based on the media plurality concept, the media or
reporters should focus on the matters and evaluate the reason of causing the murder of a 40-year-
old woman in the given case. It would help in informing the people about what happened to
Tracy and allow them to express their perceptions regarding justice for the victim. It is claimed
that media should explore the case in such a way that no one would forget the event, which will
lead the government to change their laws against the criminals.
