AI Summary
This discussion board post explores the challenges of graphic communication, defining it as a form of communication reliant on visual cues to convey messages. The author, a student, reflects on their personal difficulty in creating images that effectively communicate ideas, contrasting this with the ease of verbal and non-verbal communication. The post references scholarly sources to support the definition of graphic communication and highlights its unique ability to transcend language and attention barriers. The author's reflections are then supplemented by responses from fellow students, Kelsey Dolan and Peter Choi, who share their perspectives on the challenges of verbal communication, particularly in formal settings and for those who may experience shyness or fear. Graphic Communication
It is a term that can be defined as forms of communication which are reliant on visual
cues in order to pass a message to other people (Murray, Sandberg, Smith, Deliberato,
Stadskleiv, and von Tetzchner 2018, p.30). It is sometimes understood as a visual form of
communication. It is one of the most powerful elements of communication that is used to pass
concepts, ideas, messages and instructions to others (Thompson 2017, 143). In a single day, an
individual will see from one to hundreds of instances of visual communication when they
encounter signage, advertisements, labels, logos, drawings, and institutional graphics. It has been
noted that graphic communication has a unique ability to pass a message to many people through
a single image which can easily transcend language as well as attention barriers in order to be
accessible universally (Seemiller, and Grace 2018, p.83). These are some of the quality both non-
verbal/written and verbal communication lack. The two are dependent on the wiliness of the
listener or the reader.
Graphic communication is challenging to me since I do not have the ability to create an
image to speak volumes for me. It is always said that a single image speaks a thousand words,
but for me, this cannot be translated to be true. I do not possess a creative and innovative mind
make use of textures, colours, contours as well as shapes to communicate my attitude, emotions
and the message at large.

It is true that verbal communication can be hard sometimes, especially when you are shy
of speaking in front of people. This can be the case due to the fact that verbal communication is
the use of sound as well as words to express or pass your message from one person to another

(Vogel, Meyer, and Harendza 2018, p.157). In this case, as the sender one has to ensure that
their thoughts, emotions, feelings, opinions as well as message are passed to others though
speeches, conversations, and discussions. What makes it hard to communicate verbally for those
who are shy and afraid of facing a multitude of people is that verbal form of communication
depends on establishing as well as maintaining contact between the people and environment. If
people make you uncomfortable then the intended message will not be delivered since the
speaker will be afraid to interact with the audience and the environment at large.

I do relate to your case and agree for the fact that verbal communication can be difficult
to express depending on the circumstances at hand. Most of us have the ability to communicate
effectively with our peers in a casual setting without any problem. But the moment, the tables
have been changed, and the situation is now formal our fear of making mistakes makes verbal
communication very hard to express. The fact that verbal communication is the use of sound to
communicate as well as express our feeling, emotions, thought and message to others makes it
even hard if we are afraid of talking to the other party which makes our audience (Vogel, Meyer,
and Harendza 2018, p.157). In formal setting the mode of communication needs to have
accurate vocabularies which fit perfectly to the context and should pass the message without
misleading the audience. This makes it even hard for one who does not have the mastery of the
language used for communication.
