Reflection Report: Communication Models and Professional Development

This reflection report examines the student's learning experience regarding communication models in a healthcare context, based on the Gibbs' reflective model. Description
This reflection paper will be focusing on the weekly contents of the workbook and
specifically the paper will focus on the subtopic, models of communication. During the
classes of first week of the semester, this topic was reviewed and discussed by the instructor.
Along with the textbook some other materials were used by the instructor to provide a better
knowledge about the topic. A video and some power-point presentations related to the topic
were shown in order to clearly demonstrate the necessity of the models of communication.
Linear Model as well as Circular Transactional Model was a part of the discussion.
Feelings
At the beginning of the learning I thought such topics are not so much necessary as
well all know how to communicate. But, when I learnt about the models of communication
from its core, it changed my view. The in-depth knowledge and types of communication
model and its importance in various fields developed my interest on this topic and initially, I
was less interested in participating the class but later on, the process of teaching and the
content attracted me. However, I was concerned about completing the self-directed learning
but knowledge gained in the classroom helped me to develop my confidence.
Evaluation
The class was quite interactive and all the students were actively participation in the
teaching session. All of them were participating in the activities provided by the instructor.
Classroom participation is important in learning as it adds interest and engages students to
think critically and it helps in making connections with the content (Hanum, 2017). It also
increased my courage. Instructor introduced some activities that allowed group interaction.
The group interaction enhances the teaching learning process and it also helps in developing a

good relationship with peers (Ness, 2016). This activity also helped me in building a friendly
relationship with my peers. Whenever any of us faced confusion over anything, we asked
questions to the tutor and he explained politely and made it clear. It supported teacher-student
communication which is helpful in reducing gap in learning process (Hanum, 2017). At the
end of the teaching, homework was provided and it was a quick task. Initially I was afraid but
homework helps a student to work independently and I also got benefited with this task as it
enhanced my confidence.
Analysis
I was not so prepared on the first day but preparation helps individuals to actively
participate in the classroom teaching (Cheon & Reeve, 2015). On the first day I could not
interact properly but from the next day I went into the class with full preparation which
supported me to participate confidently. Time management is an important term and it helps
in accomplishing more with lesser effort and also decision making skill is also improved
(Lindblom, Erixon Arreman, Bohm & Hörnell, 2016). While participating in classroom
activities and homework, I learned to manage time. I interacted with my peers and teachers as
interaction always helps in increasing the confidence and lots of questions are answered in
this way. I always reviewed the content after learning as it is important in maintain the
connection with the content (Henrie, Halverson & Graham, 2015). After the completion of
the first day learning I looked over the learning guide and assessment and it helps in
providing a clear idea about the contents to be discussed throughout the week (Gray &
DiLoreto, 2016). I think there are more to learn which will help in gaining knowledge about
codes of ethics, conducts and practice document required in future.
Conclusion

Although, the learning session enhanced my knowledge but next time I will try to
concentrate and participate more. I will also get prepared before attending the class so that I
can confidently participate from the very beginning. The topics I learned are associated with
various important factors such as codes of ethics, codes of conduct and standards for practice
which are essential while working as a health professional. It will also help me in future to
build a successful career in this profession.
Action plan
Time management is quite essential in every profession (Lindblom, Erixon Arreman,
Bohm & Hörnell, 2016). In future I will focus on time management and in this purpose, 3
different goals need to be set. I will set timeframes for myself. In order to manage time, I will
set the work according to their priority and also I will make a proper plan before doing any
work. Apart from that, I will also prioritise maintaining the codes of ethics and conducts in
the workplace. I will always build a good relationship with my peers and colleagues and seek
for their help in case if I require.
