INTRODUCTION
Communication is the most effective and significant tool in health care organisation. As it
provides medical staff to provide suitable care to patient and fulfilling its objective of customer
satisfaction. Effective and continuous communication allows medical representative to analyses
the needs and demands of patient. It also provides firm an opportunity to identify the problem
faced by patients during their stay in hospitals and providing them appropriate solutions. Good
communication allows medical staff an opportunity to develop and maintain healthy relationship
with patients. It also aids organisation in reducing the risk of medical error. As due to effective
communication skills medical representative able to share information about patient health with
family members.
The report will demonstrate the use and importance of communication in health care
institution. It will highlight the methods that can be adopted by health care institutions in order to
deal with interpersonal communication between health care setting and patient.
TASK 1
1. Theories of communication in context of heath and social care
An effective communication is considered as two way procedure which involves two
persons. In this procedure an individual is listener who takes high initiative to develop
understanding about the information or fact provided by other person .Good communication
include the procedure of active listening. In context of heath and social care, it is essential for
medical staff to develop communications skills. As this will assist service provider in
demonstrating that there are more concerned about the several problems faced by patient during
their stay in hospital. It also allows medical staff a chance to develop and maintain strong
relationship with their client (Paustenbach, 2015) The theories of communication in health and
social care are:
Humanistic theory:This hypothesis is more concerned about the recognising people in society
who requires special care and attentions. Humanistic theory can be applied in health and social
care institutions where the medical staff or service provider are more concerned with dignity, self
esteem and believes in respecting each other. It is required by human resource manager in health
care institution to provide employees with proper training. As this activity will assist them in

dealing with problems and providing patient with suitable care in professional manner.
Humanistic theory focus on assisting or providing support to Self awareness and human dignity
(Wiley and Sons and Smith, 2014)For instance, this hypothesis inspire or influence people to
become more concerned about strength rather that mistakes. A person is suggested to emphasize
on planning for their future growth rather than looking behind at the past. As this activity will
support them in gaining higher level of satisfaction.
Social theory:This hypothesis supports medical staff in facilitating discussion and identifying
the appropriate method or ways for bringing positive improvement in quality of services and
various system in health care organisation. This concept is very useful when developing
specialised skills that can be utilise for treating the person suffering from specific disorder or
disease.
Cognitive Theory:This concept is associated with brain and intelligence of human being.
Cognitive theory is concerned with communicating the information which involves coding,
encoding, processing and storage of fact or data. It has focus on the way person learns to
understand and socialise in their life. Cognitive theory also emphasizes on development of an
individual during the procedure. For instance, analysing or developing understanding about
physical activities of patients , hearing to a complex, detailed explanation about their
disease, ,clear explanation that settles their uncertainty and relates directly to them.
Behavioural theory:It is more concerned with the behaviour of person. This hypothesis allows
medical team to identify the appropriate ways in order to deal with behavioural issues.
Behavioural theory involves the study of mental status of service user. This concept is based on
assumption that behaviour is largely based on learnt responses about specific stimuli.
Psychoanalytic Theory:This hypothesis or concept can be adopted by medical staff in order to
control and manage situation which include emotion, stress and behaviour of an individual.
Psychoanalytic theory states that , role of human resource manager in health and social care
institution to train their staff and provide them complete information about handling patients.
Implementation of these concepts require depth knowledge about field and specialised abilities
(Colosio and et. al., 2017)

The medical staff in health and social care institution required to develop specialise skill
that will assist them in providing suitable care to patients. These abilities will support them in
assisting organisation in achievement of business goals and objectives. There are communication
techniques or theories has been developed them can aid service provider in improving their
interaction skills. It is essential for Employees working in health and social care companies to
develop effective communication abilities that will support them in catering to the needs of
patient. Several communications skills that are required to be developed by medical staff are
ability to organise conversation, understanding about communication cycle, verbal – non verbal
messages, cultural differences etc. In addition to this, service provider requires gaining
knowledge about utilising the ability to continue healthy conversation. They should also posses
active listening skills which will assist them in developing the understanding about actual fact or
figures (Darragh and et. al., 2016)
There are various methods of communication these are verbal, non verbal
communication .Communication can be used for transmission of information about patients.
Communication in the field of health and care can be utilised for fostering growth and also for
development of practices .It can also be utilised for identifying new ideas, get updates about the
latest business trend, and improving the quality of services. Communication methods can also be
adopted for promotion products or services that is provided by the health and social care
institutions (Dubel and et. al., 2014)This form of communication is used for conducting camps,
events for generating the brand awareness and inspiring people to avail benefits or services
provided by health care organisation. Communication can adopted by medical team for
delivering the essential information about patient health to their family members or doctors who
is responsible for treating patient. It can be utilised in health and social care centre for
developing and maintaining healthy relationship with patient, partners etc. The major use of
communication in health and social care is to provide appropriate response to patients needs and
delivering effective solution to the problems faced by them during their stay in hospital.
Communication can be adopted by medical staff for performing their task and fulfilling their
responsibilities in systematic as well as effective manner (Grasso, 2016)

In case the person does not have potential to speak due to the stroke condition, then the
medical staff can provide them menu for selecting the option. The other technique is exchange of
pictures for exchanging information or facilitating communication. The other situation is if an
individual is suffering from visual impairment that it is required by medical representative to
introduce himself and communicating the objective for meeting. This is the way medical staff
can support and communicate effectively and efficiently with the person suffering from specific
disability. Person suffering from impaired cognitive function has less capability to encode and
understand information and the potential to encode and therefore express information. These
types of language communication barriers may arise due to suffering of dementia related
impairment, it also includes decrease attention, memory loss, decrease in visuospatial capability
etc. In such situation , medical staff has high liability to conduct communication. Medical
representative is required to develop knowledge about kinds of language deficits that are
common in dementia. As this strategy will assist clinical team in dealing with such patients. The
other plan that can be used by medical staff is to gather information about patient from family
m,embers , as this will assist them in communicating with patient suffering from Impaired
cognitive function.
1.3 Reviewing methods in order to deal with Inappropriate communication between service user
and social care setting
In Context of health and social care institution , there are several types of barriers that can
occur during communication process. Some hurdles are use of inappropriate language,
misrepresentation, impartial or unreliable information, Breach of confidentiality, Incongruence
messages etc. Lack of sufficient knowledge about the utilisation of particular language can give
rise to major problems in health and care centre. This factors can also leads to serious
consequences, may have direct effect on the health of patient and also on the quality of
services .It may give rise to rise in medical errors. For instance, Particular system of patient may
indicate different meaning, it is required by medical team to develop the understanding about
voice as well as body language of each and every patient in order top provide individual with
suitable treatment. It is required by doctor to be careful when writing the prescription for patient.
As due to inappropriate use of words or sentences by doctor when writing may lead to confusion
and in such case overdose of medicine can lead to patient death or may have adverse effect on

their health (Gunningham and Sinclair, 2014) According to the information act, it is required by
medical team to keep all the record or information related to patient confidential until and unless
it becomes necessary to disclose. This factor assists medical staff in developing trust and gaining
patient loyalty. Due to wrong use of patient information , medical team has to face legal
obligation. This factor can also have adverse impact on patient and medical representative
relationship. It has major impact on image of health care organisation. The medical
representative in health and social care companies required to support their co workers and other
employees in order to deal with issues of inappropriate interpersonal communication. As this
activity will help medical team in exploring and capturing several opportunities or benefits of
effective communication.
The methods that can be adopted by the medical team in health and social care
organisation to deal with inappropriate interpersonal communication are implementation or use
of technology such as telecommunication devices. It is required by Human resource manager to
make proper arrangement for providing training to them and supporting them in identifying
suitable ways to deal with such type of information. Training will help medical staff in
recognising the needs of services user and providing satisfaction to patient. This will further aid
medical team or nurses in hospital to avoid inappropriate interpersonal communication.
Constant evaluation , review and monitoring by medical representative in recognising the
appropriate solution to the problem. An individual working in health and social care institutions
can adopt verbal or non verbal communication method in order to deal with such circumstances

It is required by manager in health and social care institutions to gather sufficient data or
information about the trends, market conditions etc. As this strategy will assist medical team or
service provider in recognising the needs of service user and providing satisfaction to customers.
It will also allow medical team to deliver quality and suitable care to patient. This strategy will
support manager in health and social care organisation in development of effective and
appropriate strategies that will further assist firm in achieving success and fostering growth.

provider. As this strategy will allow employees to deliver quality service to user and proving
them with satisfaction. It will also support medical team in generating the awareness about the
methods that can be used by people in society for living healthy and safe life. These strategies
can be adopted by medical team in health and social care for improving their communication
with patients. It is required by medical staff to develop the understanding about the symptoms of
various diseases or special kind of disorders. As this will support medical team in health and
social care institution in providing suitable care to parents and avoiding medical errors (Lennon,
and et.al,. 2017)
Breach of confidentiality is the major offence according to the law. It restricts the
medical team from disclosing the information about patient to other person until and unless
necessary. For instance, medical staff or doctor is required to maintain the confidentiality of
patient information until and unless permission is grated by patient or their family members. As
breaking their trust may lead to major barriers in communication. It is essential for clinical team
to gather information about patient from their family members. As this strategy will support
them in providing suitable care and treatment.
CONCLUSION
Report has concluded that communication is essential factor in health and social care. As
minor issues in communication process can have negative effect on the quality of services and
also on reputation of organisation. This factors can also have adverse impact on patient
health .Inappropriate interpersonal communication can lead to major hurdles in achieving goals
and objectives by firm. Project has concluded that communication assist medical staff in

developing and maintaining healthy relationship with patient. This is the factors through which
medical staff gets about complete information about patient health.
The various strategies have been provided by the project which can be used by health and
social care organisation for improving the quality of services and enhancing the communication
with patients. It can also be used for dealing with several issues that may occur in delivering
effective care to patients or service user.
