Communication skills are necessary for establishing social and professional
connections (Hinkle et al. 2017). Both speaking and writing skills are integral part of a good
communicator. One such person I know is J. K. Rowling. She is a British novelist famous for
her Harry Potter novels. As it is evident, her writing skills are exceptional as she has been
able to appeal to both the children and adults all over the world. She is in the literature and
entertainment industry and has been one of the most successful children literature writer till
date.
The communication skills of Rowling, both writing and speaking has been an integral
part for her success. The books that she has written are easy to understand and has a clear
coherent structure. They hook the readers at the beginning and continues to appeal till the
series ends. Her language is easy and is loved unanimously. For speaking skills, she uses her
easy style in interviews and talk shows. She uses both language and gesture, facial
expressions and body language to express her meanings which makes it easier to understand
(Hosťovecký, 2017).
One example that comes to my mind where Rowling had used her communication
skills to her advantage is when the series ended people were unable to get out of the magical
world of harry potter. She used her communication skills of writing and hooking then readers
and contributed to pottermore, a website that accounts all the characters of the novel. She
presented podcasts and videos, explaining the untold stories and facts about the characters.
This kept the popularity intact which resulted in the creation of a fan fiction book. I do not
believe that she would have been successful if she had not used her written and speaking
communication abilities. Her writing is what gave her recognition and her speaking was
effective for keeping the magic of Harry Potter alive.
