2COMMUNICATION AND NEGOTIATION SKILLS
Introduction
The processes of negotiation and communication are one of the most basic ones
within the cannon of not only the business world but at the same time in other walks of life as
well (Oetzel 2017). It is significant to note that scholars are of the viewpoint that the
prospects of an individual as well as business organizations depend to a large extent on the
effectiveness and also the efficiency with which they are being able to use these concepts for
the resolution of these two concepts (Oetzel 2017). Furthermore, it is also seen that the
process of communication becomes an indispensible one within the cannon of the business
world since the managers and other important individuals of an organization need to convey
on a regular important as well as relevant information to the employees so that they are not
only being able to perform the tasks which are assigned to them in the best possible manner
but also in the kind of way which is in synchronicity with the requirements of the concerned
organization (Greenaway et al. 2015). In this regard the concept of negotiation also becomes
an important since through the effective use of this particular concept the organization and
the employees can come to a baseline decision about the manner in which they need to
perform their job roles (Chen and Tseng 2016). This report will discuss about the concepts of
communication and negotiation in the particular context of the case of Barry.
Communication challenges and barriers faced by Barry
The major challenge that Barry is facing at the current moment is the fact that he is
being unable to convey the message regarding the effective use of the basic food safety and
hygiene to the workers of the place in which he is working. The major reason for this
particular problem faced by Barry can be attributed to the fact that the majority of the
employees of the place come from diverse cultural backgrounds with different practices as
well as values. In addition to this, at the same time it is also seen that some of the employees

are not even familiar with the language of English. Furthermore, the organization does
provides various kinds of “on job training” to the employees as well as the new employees
but often it is seen that when the workflow is high these employees are sent straight to the
kitchen without any training itself. This is not only against the precepts following by Barry
but the international as well as the national legislations as well. As a matter of fact he himself
has put up various kinds of sign boards within the workplace like “KEEP HOT FOOD HOT
AND COLD FOOD COLD and WASH YOUR HANDS ALWAYS AND OFTEN” yet there
is not effect. Furthermore, the wide diversity in the age brackets of the individuals who work
for Barry is another significant factor which hinders the adaptation of a standard
communication process or style by Barry for the purpose of conveying the importance of
following the food safety and hygiene measures. These in short are some of the
communication challenges faced by Barry.
Possible Solutions for Barry
There are various methods that Barry can take the help of for the mitigation or the
resolution of the issues that he is facing at the current moment. However, two of the most
methods that he can take the help for the resolution of the issues are effective communication
and negotiation.
Effective Communication
The process of communication is one of the most basic requirements of any business
and the effectiveness as well as the efficiency of a particular organization depends to a large
on the manner in which the concerned organization is being able to convey the important to
the employees (Luthans and Doh 2018). As already mentioned the communication challenges
as well as barriers that Barry is facing at the current are because of the cultural diversity
within the workplace and also because of the inability of the majority of these employees to

speak English. In the case study under discussion here Barry can take the help of the various
precepts of the concept of Cross cultural communication like gestures, use of non-verbal
communication methods and others to convey his message in the best possible manner to the
employees. In addition to these, the use of various kinds of visual messages would also be
very helpful.
Negotiation skills
The case study makes it clear that the majority of the employees do not agree will
with the dictums of Barry regarding the food safety and hygiene. Barry can take the help of
the process of negotiation to establish the base regulations that will be not only agreed upon
by all the employees but at the same time will also be followed by them (Thompson 2018).
This will require Barry to come up with an initial proposition and then have a discussion with
all the employees wherein they will be given the chance to raise their opinions. Then
depending on the kind of feedbacks that he has got from the employees he can set up the
basic rules which all the employees of the organization need to follow in a sacrosanct
manner. This is likely to help Barry in a significant manner to solve the issues that he is
facing at the current moment.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
The use of SOPs has become necessary for the various organizations of the present
and in addition to this they need to be in synchronicity with the regulations as well as the
legislations of the national government (Blok 2014). Barry and the organization in which he
is currently working belong to the food sector and thus they will have to follow the various
regulations as well as the legislations of the national government related to the food industry.
For example, the various SOPs that Barry can implement within the workplace are food
safety, proper hygienic measures, proper handling of the food materials and others.

Implantation of effective measures related to food safety like effective handling of food,
preserving raw food materials at adequate temperatures and others. These will not only
ensure the safety of the food products but at the same time will ensure that the concerned
organization is able to save a significant amount of capital which would have happened by
the wastage of raw food ingredients. In addition to these, he can also take the help of the
reward and the reprimand system where the employees who are following the stipulations
will be rewarded whereas the individuals who are not following will be reprimanded (Hargie
2016).
Effective Communication and Motivation
The process of effective communication if utilized in an adequate manner can render
various kinds of benefits to the concerned individual (Berson et al. 2015). For example, the
effective use of this particular concept will not only help Barry to convey the importance of
the concept of food safety but at the same time will help him to motivate the employees in the
best possible manner. This is very important since majority of the times people do not follow
certain stipulations or guidelines that have been provided to them because of lack of
motivation. Thus, Barry take the help of the process of effective communication and thereby
convey to the diverse employees the importance of the effective use of the concept of food
safety and the benefits that the use of such a process is likely to provide to the concerned
organization and also to them as well (Boies, Fiset and Gill 2015). Furthermore, he can use
the concept of effective communicate to influence the employees of the organization so that
they make the most of the concept of food safety that he is trying to propound. Moreover, the
use of this particular process will help Barry to cascade information, build effective
relationships with the employees, will improve his decision making skills and these in turn

will help him to motivate the employee to follow the food safety measure (Mostafa, Gould
Williams and Bottomley 2015).
Conclusion
In conclusion, the concept of effective communication and negotiation has emerged as
one of the most important ones within the cannon of the business. Thus, the majority of the
business enterprises are taking the help of these concepts for process of their business.
Furthermore, effective use of these concepts not only helps these organizations to convey the
important information to the employees which in turn helps to perform in a much better
manner but at the same time reduces the various kinds of conflicts that these organizations. In
addition to these, in the recent times it is also seen that the various organizations are using
these concepts to motivate the employees so that they are being able to perform as per the
stipulations of the concerned organization. Thus, it can be said that these two concepts have
become an indispensible part of the modern business world and if used in an effective manner
can help in the improvement of the prospects of an organization.
