EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND IMPROVING PERFORMANCE.
Communication can be defined as exchange of information between two people. It can
also be defined as the procedure of sharing of views or ideas with other person in order to
develop mutual understanding. An affective communication is very much crucial in context of
both education and performing job at workplace.
The reflective essay will have focus on identification of the ability which has been
developed by an individual working as a registered nurse in nursing profession. Driscoll's model
will be used for sharing the experience.
DRISCOLL'S MODEL
Demonstrating the experience of effective communication and the procedure which has enabled
me to improve performance.
Driscolls model is a framework which is used by people for reflecting their experience. It
matches the three phases of an experiential learning cycle.
Application of Driscoll's model of reflection.
What?
The application of hypothesis of reflection will allow me to identify the different fields
which will assist me in enhancing experience in nursing practice. It will also support me in
development of abilities which can be beneficial as well as helpful in context of improving the
quality of care in health and social care institution. The reflection will also assist me in
improving my understanding of the medical practices (Vickers, 2018). One of the ability which I
am expecting that I will improve is communication skills that will further help me in enhancing
the health services within nursing profession. The knowledge that will be shared by people in a
group will assist me in developing the communication skills that further would assist me in
developing the understanding about requirement of service user in health and social care
institution. In addition to this, If I will develop the understanding about demands of patients as
well as colleagues it will assist me in creating as well as maintaining the confidentiality in health
care practice.

From my job experience as a nurse I gained knowledge about the various level of
communication between nursing practitioner as well as patients. I feel very great when I got an
opportunity to conduct independent investigation in order to identify the adverse health
promotion practices. I felt quite surprise when I came to know about the risk building
impairment in communication procedure (Dune, John and Arora, 2018). I felt little surprised
after analysing the findings of research which reveals that eighty percent of people suffering
from mental illness face difficulty in interacting with other people. After analysing the results of
investigation I believe that it is very much crucial to emphasizes on utilizing the different types
of media such as symbols, pictures for enhancing communication.
So What?
During my job as a registered nurse in health and social care institution I got a chance to
have discussion in a group. While having the discussion with the colleagues I upraised few
problems which have assisted me to review the nursing from different point of view (Wearne,
2018.). I perceive that nurses in health and social care institution should respect people, as it is
the respect which supports in maintaining an effective communication between medical staff as
well as patients or their family members. I also think that use of an appropriate words can be
helpful in context of showing respect for other.
During the group discussion, there was point of time when my opinion was completely
different from my colleagues. However, the contribution of group members in the discussions
has assisted me in developing the understanding about the various principles of health
promotion. The things which I have learned by listening to the views of colleagues has provided
me an ease in re-examining my abilities as well as knowledge as a nurse.
Now What?
The things which I will do differently from the group members includes I will take high
initiative for facilitating meaningful communication between group members. I would give all
members with equal chance for making their valuable contribution to team. During the group
discussion there was a point of time when I felt frustrated as I did not get a chance to share my
views (Tascón, 2018). I perceive that there should be both verbal as well as non-verbal
communication among group members.

After performing the self assessment I found that being accommodative can be helpful in
context of eliminating the chances of disempowering patients those who faces difficulty in
communicating with other people. While working as a nurse in health and social care institution I
realise the significance of effective communication. I have able to enhance my communication
skills by listening as well as interacting with colleagues during the group discussion.
After analysing the findings, I perceive that nurses are required to develop the conductive
environment. I would also like to suggest that medical staff in health and social care institutions
need to be more adaptive as well as creative in relation to the developing understanding about
patients those who belong to different background. I also found that being accommodative can is
essential as it will help in avoiding the chances of misunderstanding as well as conflicts among
medical staff and an individual patient have difficulty in facilitating communication. For
example, patient suffering from dementia disease might feel bad seeing other interacting in
fluent manner (Purnell, 2018.). In such situation it is very much essential for nurse to
communicate effectively as well as friendly manner while delivering services to patient suffering
from special kind of disability such as dementia.

It has been concluded from the above reflective essay that the knowledge as well as
experienced which I gained will assist me in demonstrating my nursing skills. The other thing
which has been summarized from the above reflective essay is that Driscoll's reflective model
has assisted be identification of skills which can be helpful in context of improving the health
