Description
I undertook a group activity section in which we were supposed to go and do wound
dressing for a person who lived with chronic ulcers on his legs. We were to present before a class
the procedures and type of medication used during our activity. The group was made up of five
people from different levels of education. The group was designed to improve on our learning
skills.
Feelings.
I felt confident because the assignment enabled me to improve my communication skills
in an easy way. I was also anxious to be in a group of people not familiar with. I did not know
how to handle them since I was not aware of their altitudes. I took the group work as an
advantage to increase my communication skills. Communication is the central to human
interaction and without it people cannot interact well (Mark, 2018). I also felt confident because
working with people from different levels of education will improve my skills in wound
dressing.
Evaluation
At first, people were afraid of giving out their ideas because we were all strange to each
other. We decided to give ourselves ten minutes break to interact and know each other well.
Through this interaction, people got to know each other’s attitudes, their culture and other things
which created a strong relationship between the members. Good relationship and effective
communication aid in achieving goals (Michael, 2016)). The similarity between this learning
experience with that of professional is that both requires effective communication to achieve

good results. The difference between the two experiences is that in learning, people need to
interact first before doing a particular task whereas in professional, nurses interact as they
continue working together.
Analysis
During this group work, I was able to improve on my communication skills. Nurses
should have good communication because this will enable them create good relationship with the
patients hence achieving optimum care (Jessica, 2012). Also, I was able to improve on my
critical thinking because everyone was supposed to give an answer to three questions. Moreover,
I learned that some decisions in nursing practice requires critical thinking. For example,
choosing between familiarizing yourself with the drugs and assisting nurses in taking care of the
patients. Finally, I learned that wound dressing is a complex process and therefore nurses should
use aseptic procedures to improve healing.
Conclusion
Group discussion is important because it helps in improving communication skills.
Having effective communication helps nurses in giving optimum care. Also, group discussion
helps in improving critical thinking. Nurses are required to apply critical thinking to avoid
making decisions which cannot result to optimum care.
Action plan.
This group discussion has enabled me improve on my communication and critical
thinking skills. In future, I will be able to communicate well without fear and be focused towards
achieving my goals. I will also be able to make critical decisions which are aimed at achieving
goals.
