options that company can adopt for expanding their operation. Beside this, evaluation of
each alternative will be done for making effective plan.
Areas of expansion
Tesco has four options through which they can aggressively grow their business.
These options are mentioned below:
Market penetration – Expansion does not always means entering in new market.
Tesco can also focus in increase their market share in existing markets. They will have to
concentrate on enhancing sale of existing products like doing more advertising and offering
better discount on current commodities that are being sold at their stores.
Product development – Tesco can also expand their business by increasing their
product portfolio. They can launch variety of new goods and services in existing market as
it will assist them in earning more revenue.
Market development – Tesco is already present in many nations; they can enter in
new market where company does not have any existing till now. They do not have to sell
something new; they only have to follow same process and open stores by offering existing
products.
Diversification – If Tesco opt for this strategy then it means that they will have to
enter in new market by selling completely new product & services. They can enter in
developing nation but starting a business entering in an industry where company is not
currently working.
Merits and Demerits of each option
Market penetration
Merits - This strategy does not involve much risk as organisation does not have to
enter in new economy or sell new product. Discount offers and aggressive advertising can
increase repetitive purchase as customers will avoid visiting other stores.
Demerits – Main issue with market penetration is that it does not offer long term
solutions to an organisation. Tesco can enhance their sale by using this strategy but after
few months they may have to again spend same amount of money for enhancing
decreasing sales.
Product development
Merits - With new products, company can target more customers and it will also
help them in sustaining present one as customers always prefer to have more options in
store.
Demerits – If newly launched products do not get good response from customers
each alternative will be done for making effective plan.

success and failure. Market development will be easy for them and it will also easy them as
they only have to find appropriate market.

hold in emerging markets, and they may not allow company to grab essential market share
for many years.
