Introduction
In the process of making a career one faces various personal and professional challenges.
I believe that one of the biggest barriers that can be faced in the process of making my career is
communication skills. An inability to communicate effectively is a significant barrier in career
making. The inability to convey through, desires and feelings in an appropriate manner can affect
the performance and productivity especially in the workplace. Further, as per the US department
of Labor, communication barrier is considered to be the top most skill required in organizations.
This might increase the chance of promotion and retention in the organization. In order to
overcome the communication, I need to work on improving mu perception. I need to seek for
constructive feedback which can increase me awareness. Further, I need to work on my listening
skills and increase empathy.

Barrier in the process of career development
Barrier is considered to be the challenges that one might face in the process of developing
their career and making progress in their future. It hinders the advancement potential of the
individual. For example, unrealistic expectations and lack of effective communication can be a
significant barrier in the process of career development and progression. Moreover, lack of
communication skills can lead to lack of confidence which becomes a personal barrier to the
career progression. Lack of confidence and communication skills can make an individual to miss
out relevant opportunities in the career (Felson, Richard 2013). Communication is considered to
be one of the most crucial skills in the career; a lack of it might hinder the changes of promotion

in the business organization (Lunenburg, Fred, 2010). This inability can also be a barrier in the
academic progress as it limits self confidence and reduces team interaction.
Strategy to overcome barrier
The communication barrier can be overcome by using various verbal and non verbal
communication tools and strategies to maintain the operations of the business and share data and
information to the team. Difficulty to maintain and develop relationship with the team members
in the organization can lead to confusion and lack of confidence (Rietveld, Piet, and Leon Jansse
2013). There I need to identify the communication barriers, be aware of my communication
habits before resolving the issue. The common form of communication barrier is past
experiences and perceptions. I need to understand and respect the opinion and perceptions of the
other person especially during negotiations. I will be improving my listening abilities and skills
to enhance my communication skills (Rogers, Carl and Fritz Roethlisberger, 2013). I have been
practicing to stay open minded and willing to seek for information and willing to help the
coworkers in solving problems. This strategy can help me to promote a comfortable and effective
teamwork in the organization.
Conclusion
Therefore, from the above analysis it has been identified that lack of effective
communication can be a barrier in the process of career development. However, this can be
overcome will be the help of practicing communication having an open mindset while
communication and increase empathy. Further, I need to improve my listening skills. This will
help me to overcome the barrier in career development.
