NOTES
Barriers and Challenges to Effective Communication
Communication efforts trying to conveys information that might be judged as being boring or uninteresting for the
receiving party, may cause their mind to drift and focus on other topics, making them not pay attention to the
communication operation is another major barrier to effective communication.
Physical disabilities such as being deaf, mute or blind also pose as major challenges and barrier towards effective
communication between two or multiple involved individuals.
Emotional and psychological barriers such as topics related to sex, politics, race or religion tend to make people
hesitant and pose as a significant challenge and barrier towards effective communication.
Strategies to Overcome Barriers to Effective Communication
The speaker or sender of the information is also required to make or structure the communication content in an
interactive, relevant and engaging manner, so that all parties involved in the communication operations are interested,
focused and engaged in the communication operations, without which effective communication cannot occur (Oetzel,
2017).
The sender or speaker is also required to know whether if there are any linguistic barriers that are present between
different individuals participating in communication operations, if so they should make use of nonverbal or visual
types of communication to better articulate their ideas and information to others in order to effectively communicate
with one another.
Feedbacks can be used after the communication operations have finished, in order to evaluate whether the listeners or
receivers have in fact understood the information that was being provided to them, in order to improve effective
communication efforts.
Influence of Culture on Negotiation and Communication
People belonging to different cultures possess distinct sensitivities towards timing restrictions and operational risks.
When individuals belonging to different cultures communicate or negotiate with one another, these tend to influence
immensely (Thompson, 2018).
Cultural background of individuals also significantly influences their ability to be formal or informal with others
during conversations with people who are above or below their own age range or towards individuals belonging to
