Challenges and barriers to effective communication
Effective communication is referred to as clear transmission of information from one person to another on a timely
and concise manner. There are various barriers which leads to ineffective communication. Some of them are listed
below:
Physical barrier: It is referred to as natural condition which act as a barrier in communication at the time
of transmission of important information to another. It can be due to distortion, overflow of information, noise, etc.
which in turn adversely influence the communication process among individual.
Cultural barrier: Culture gives rise to manners, prejudice, opinion, manners, ethnocentrism. Different
cultural background like speakers accent, pronunciation, etc. results in ineffective communication as different
cultures have different meaning.
Psychological barrier: Communication is largely influenced by the psychological and mental condition of
the person. This barrier mainly consists of poor eyesight, ill health, pain, hearing disabilities, lack of interest, inability
to pay attention, prejudice, forming opinions, conscious state of mind, emotions, attitude, etc.
Linguistic barriers: Language barrier is referred to as one of the main communication barrier which in
turn results in misunderstanding at the time transmission of data. Professional jargon, use of slang, regional
colloquialism results in ineffective communication.
Strategies to overcome communication barrier
Avoid using slang language: Using slang language leads to significant barrier in a communication
process. Slang language differs in culture and generation and leads to confusion. Using common and simple
terminology helps in effective communication.
Aware of cultural problems and differences: People should understand the cultural background, caste
and religion which in turn helps in resolving various cultural issues effectively.
Improve the perceptions: Taking constructive feedback and seeking honest interest helps in increasing
self awareness. It must focus on active listening which in turn results in high operational growth and efficiency.
Avoiding overload of information: Individuals should focus on prioritizing their work and transmit the
important information. People should not overload the individual with lot of information. This helps in effective
communication and helps in effectively transmitting information from one person to another without creating any
confusion.
Elimination of noise: This is referred to as one of the main cause of communication barrier. It is very
important to identify and eliminate the various sources of noise which in turn results in effective communication.
