2COMMUNICATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL PRACTICE
Introduction
At each level of education communication is referred to as one of the most effective and
essential skill that each student need to posses. Two different topics I will individually
demonstrate and discuss in this assigned followed by “Topic 1: Understanding and working with
diverse others and Topic 2: Interpersonal communication”. The organizational setting selected
for the journal is my University, (University of South Australia) where I am pursuing degree of
business management. I experienced many positive and some negative things during the session.
I can say that my University setting was not just dependent on students but also on the lecturers,
staffs and other working employees as well. I have faced difficult situations when I was assigned
for a project (which was not a real world project but a small academic one as final year group
project). It was group project where I had to work with 3 other class mates. During that stage I
faced many challenges and issues. At the same time throughout the journey I have learnt many
things also. My role during that project assignment was to prepare the business case. Rest of the
team was allocated to analyze the business case and prepare a detail business plan for a fictional
business given by my lecturer.
In order to comprehend diverse activities and their impact in workplace two different
aspects I have further selected: “Aspect 1: Barriers to accepting diversity and Aspect 2: Cross-
cultural differences”. For the topic 2: Interpersonal communication the chosen aspects are Aspect
1: Communication climate and Aspect 2: Communication styles.
Being a student of business management I have learnt that, importance of communication
does not differ much for different organizational setting. Dwyer and Hopwood (2019) stated that,
the frequency and intensity of communication may change but their importances are not much

different. In order to maintain a good work atmosphere and supporting learning environment the
students, teachers, employees and also management team members are all responsible.
Therefore, they all need to communicate wisely and appropriately.
Analysis
Topic 1: Understanding and working with diverse others
Aspect 1: Barriers to accepting diversity
Diversity is referred to as a wide range of diverse individuals, who are associates to either
an organization or other workplace setting. In other words, diversity in workplace defines those
people whose characteristics are completely different from each other. Dwyer (2020) stated that,
workplace diversity is not just different workforce to an organization rather it involves
diversified talent to the organization. Most of the organizations believe in workforce diversity
and divides their employees and their pay scale based on degree, skill, age, gender and ethnicity
(Choroszewicz & Adams 2019). Employee empowerment is also diversified based on theses
workforce.
It was primarily decided that the supervisor will arrange team meeting every week. The
supervisor also arranged so but I found that as I was the only girl in my team he mostly used to
treat me like an negligible object. Infact my team members also distributed the responsibilities
between three other and I was just left with minimum responsibilities. I have good
sommunication and leadership skill I expected that I would be allowed to take part in the
activities but somewhere it did not happened. Apart from that I have also realized that my team

members were not supporting me throughout basically due to gender discrimination. I was very
disappointed for that.
Aspect 2: Cross-cultural differences
Cultural barrier difference is nothing but cross cultural difference that most of the large
organizations faces because they do deal with multiple numbers of employees who belong to
different religion and cultural background. The major dynamics of culture can be identified as
mutual social perceptual set with cultural differences, meaning and action. Similar statement can
perceive varied meaning for people who belongs to different cultural background (Kharouf et al.
2019). Again language may not be understood by the person from different culture and religious
background. If many such diverse people are assigned in single projects then this type of issues
generally gives rise. In order to get success in a project positive work culture is very essential. If
the work culture failed to support the team associates and their team members then the project
will not be able to meet the expected objectives and benefits (Bos et al. 2019). In order to avoid
misinterpretation and miscommunication as soon as a project manager assigns different people
from various cultural background he needs to develop a specific standard norms and policy. It
should be instructed that people who are assigned for that specific project need to maintain the
policy throughout the project development lifecycle.
I have faced major cultural diversity and communication gap issues. This cultural
diversity makes the communication between us more difficult. Different cultures have developed
their own language as part of their heritage. The people are also comfortable enough to use their
own language while communicating. Semantic and non verbal communication is again not all
time reliable because meaning of sign language is also different for different countries. I realized
that it gave rise to prejudices, opinions, manner, ethnocentrism etc. language, sings and symbols,

Stereotypes and Prejudices, belief, behavior eta re the negative impact of cross cultural barriers. I
think stereotype is one of the most effective communication problem resolving mechanism
because stereotyping can be created based on nationality, race, gender, religion, age etc.
Topic 2: Interpersonal communication
Aspect 1: Communication climate
Group cohesiveness is a level of purpose as well as commitment that are related to the
members and team associates. Teams become stronger if all the members belong to a same team
are treated equally with equal values. Climate is referred to as an atmosphere that each project
team expects throughout any project development life cycle period (Dwyer 2020). The quality of
communication is also dependent on the communication climate. In order to get success in a
project it is very important to form a good culture.
In other word words, communication climate is a key to develop positive relation in an
organization. Encouragement and praise are the two most effective factors that play important
role to create a communication climate (Deep, Salleh & Othman 2019). Though, these factors
vary a lot with promotions and rewards. The other factor is open communication because
everybody loves open and honest discussion (Jack, Ridley & Turner 2020). Honest and positive
discussion always helps to create transparent policy. It is also plays effective role in proper
decision making. A climate can be defined as a good one only when it gives equal importance to
every those person who is involved in the discussion.
I think that in order to create a good workplace culture some traits on which the project
manager and the associate team members are required to focus. First of all, employees are to be

valued, a high level trust must be exist among the team and leader, there should have possible
conflict resolving strategies. Employees are required to be informed and updated. Feedback
given by each individual are needed to be considered.
I think that my university climate was hampered during the 3rd meeting where I and rest
of my team associates were present along with the supervisor. in that meeting the tone of the
supervisor was not good enough towards us. Supervisor was dealing with us very rudely. We had
some new ideas and we planned to share those things on that day meeting. However, due to that
such bad behavior and communication climate all my team members refused to illustrate the
discussion further.
Aspect 2: Communication styles
Five basic styles of communication are there such as assertive, aggressive, passive,
submissive and manipulative. Assertive communication is defined as one of the healthiest style
of communication but very use of this style of communication is lesser than any other.
This style helps to meet the expected goals without hearting anyone else’s feeling and
thought. It is socially expressive and considers people’s emotion as well (Lasater 2019).
Aggressive communication is an ineffective communication styles where one tries to dominate
others, uses humiliation for controlling others opinion, criticizes, blames and attack others
(Lawson et al. 2019). Passive communication is such a communication where people mostly try
to control or hide their thoughts and emotion. This style of communication is not at all
acceptable in the field of business. Submissive style of communication is about pleasing others
to avoid any kind of conflict. Sometime it seems to be very casual and in case on workplace
project use of this type of communication is not at all beneficial (Waghmare 2020). Manipulation

7COMMUNICATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL PRACTICE
is the other style of communication where one tries to manipulate other so they can take
advantage.
I have realized that my supervisor was mostly using the aggressive style of
communication while interacting with me and my team. Infact one of the team members was also
very aggressive in nature. Instead of supporting the other members he was more focused on
dominating other and handover his work responbilities on others. He was manipulating also by
nature. He always kept on trying to manipulate others. It created high degree of issues because
work responsibility was already distributed among the team at the very initiation stage and no
one was ready to fully take all his responbilities whereas, he was not even helping the others to
accomplish their responbilities. In my opinion, conflict management is very essential for
organizational success if intra conflict continues then team coordination and internal support will
e completely lost.
Conclusion
From the above detail discussion it is concluded that, in order to create and maintain a
good supporting learning environment each and everyone’s contribution is essential. Not only
the learners but also the supervisor and lecturers are also required to support the students
throughout. I think that for creating a good relationship communication is the best way. This
aspect only gives opportunities to share information and resolve contradictory situations. The
key challenges or issues that are identified in the paper are barriers to accept diversity, cross
cultural differences, communication climate and communication style. The mentioned issues I
have faced throughout the University project development session. Though, before the final
execution of the project the team became cooperative and helping as well. In my opinion,

responsibility and roles distribution is complimentary to effective communication. If task or
responsibility is properly distributed based on individual’s skills and expertise then team work
becomes easier. However, in order to avoid further challenges related to communication some
recommendations are suggested in the below section:
Recommendations
Transparency: The leader or the supervisor needs to keep the fellow associates informed
related to general operation that are expected to be performed by individuals. Transparency will
help the organization setting to communicate effectively between the leaders and associates as
well. It holds an open door policy which allows the associates resolving their issues easily. The
retention rate also gets improved a lot after the implementation of this approach.
Conducting workshop: Conducting timely workshop is another very important thing
that helps to increase the skill and knowledge of the associates and make sure that all the
operations are running well without any sort of intra team conflict and misunderstanding.
Use of open communication: Different types of communication approaches are there
such as upward, horizontal, downward, parallel etc. However, in order to create a balanced
organizational setting among these approaches open communication is the best possible
approach suggested to use. With the help of open communication teachers and lecturers will be
able to create a good learning teaching environment where the student will feel free to ask for
their queries.
