2THINKING AND REASONING
I am a resident of Canada Sudbury. I want to work over any of the sustainable goals so
that I can make some useful contributions in order to make this world a better place to live in. As
per my perception joining the Social service course is really of utmost importance as it helps us
in taking proper responsibility for our neighbours. There were some poor kids living in my
locality. I remember how they used to starve due to lack of the basic necessities of life like food,
shelter and clothing. Right from my childhood, I wanted to do something to help them.
I have chosen to work over the first sustainable development goal that is no poverty.
This goal manly works for abolishing poverty in all forms. This is very important because it
helps in making all the people get equal opportunities to live in society. No poverty means to
make sure that all the people are getting access to a standard amount of income, food clothing
and shelter. However, I also feel that poverty must be removed not only in the superficial levels
but also in the very grass root level. For instance, about 80 % of people living in the sub-Saharan
African and the South Asian regions still live under poverty. I have been strongly influenced by
some of the targets and the indicators of this aspect-
targets indicators
By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all
people everywhere, currently measured as
people living on less than $1.25 a day
The proportion of population below
the international poverty line, by sex, age,
employment status and geographical location
(urban/rural
By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion
of men, women and children of all ages living
The proportion of the population living below
the national poverty line, by sex and age

national definition
Thus, the no poverty goal is important as it has an all-pervasive objective of helping people
living under extreme poverty with a negligible income of about $1.25 a day. The other important
feature is the objective of making a proper employment status for these people.
I think that this goal is the first stepping stone in making the world a better place. Some
people are of the opinion that much development is now being done in the poverty-stricken area
and so this problem is now under control. Thus they demand more focus over the other issues
like decent work and economic growth. However, I strongly argue here because I feel that no
person can be striving toward attaining a job in a decent position unless they are able to fulfil the
basic necessities of life like food, shelter and clothing.
I strongly want to work in this particular aspect that is no poverty. As per my thoughts, it
is always important to start from small and manageable steps before making any big move. It is
for this reason that I have been doing in-depth research in order to find an organisation involved
in this matter. I wanted to start dealing with this problem from my local place. I contacted the
organisation called Canada Without Poverty (CWP).
One of their important works is the project called CWP on the hills. The organisation
has tried to work with the people who are isolated and marginalised. They aim at bringing those
people from the margins to the centre. This organisation takes up the work of eradicating
poverty from all the places in and around Canada. They also undertake a very noble initiative
called human rights education. This organisation considers poverty as the deprivation of

fundamental rights. They work not only for reducing poverty by helping people with money but
also try to educate them so that they can fight for their social rights and their educational rights.
Thus I was very impressed by their work and wanted to work with them.
One of the unique features is they always focus over the long term goals like removing
poverty from all over Canada and many just some selected places. All-Party Anti-Poverty
Caucus was a project undertaken by them where they collected postcards from all over Canada
to sketch the anti-poverty plan. The postcards were collected as part of the International Day for
the Eradication of Poverty (October 17) in collaboration with 45 other communities from coast-
to-coast-to-coast and CWP’s partner in the Dignity for All campaign.
There can be some challenges that can stop them from attaining their goals like lack of
sufficient funds and support. Thus they have their helpline page Support Our Work, through
which the general public can make their contributions. There are sub-categories like they make
contributions or donations. It is through these places that people can convey their little effort and
support. I have started working with them, and for me, this is an excellent experience. I am being
able to take part in all their projects and campaign request to all the citizens living in and around
Canada to make some or the other kinds of contributions for creating this group a great success.
