Responsibilities of Community and Public Health Nurses
Community health nurses integrate community involvement and knowledge regarding the
general population with individual, disease experiences of every individual, their families and
own understanding of the health within the society (DeMarco & Healey-Walsh, 2019). The
nurses help community members to raise their concerns and aspirations to the relevant bodies in
a population. They are knowledgeable in numerous intervention approaches ranging from those
that can be applied to the general population to those that can be integrated on a personal and
family level plan (DeMarco & Healey-Walsh, 2019). They translate knowledge from the social
and health science to the society using different channels, including programs, interventions, and
advocacy groups.
The public health nurses offer a critical link between epidemiological data and clinical
conceptualization of illness and health as it is witnessed in people’s lives. The knowledge is put
into action for the benefit of the community. For instance, they are responsible for the
monitoring and surveillance of disease trends within the community
(Smolowitz et al., 2015). The nurses identify emergent trends that potentially threaten the health
of the general population, and recommend measures to alleviate the threat.
In the US the public health nurses serve as educators, where they focus on presenting
different materials to the general population in a comprehensible approach. They offer
information to societies that generate a context for healthy living and choices. They are involved
in sex and HIV education to the young generation and undertake seminars on diabetes
management for the elderly individuals.
