What is community policing?
In USA, the primary institution of justice is police. They act for the interest of the
common citizen and their primary duty is to curb the criminal activities. However, as the
crime rate in USA is at high, it is not possible for the police to take care of every single
matters and a co-operation of common people is necessary in this case. This practice has been
known as community policing, where the local citizens are involved with the police with n
intention to identify the criminal activities district wise and Violent Crime Control and Law
Enforcement Act of 1994 has been enacted to this effect (Cordner, 2014). However, the rules
of the community policing are varying from district wise and according to a report submitted
in 2003, in USA, around 83% citizens are served by the law enforcement agencies.
Role of citizen:
The main aim of community policing is to develop the public safety and local
citizens are playing an important role in this case. Community policing are working in three
groups such as organisational transformation, community partnership and problem solving.
According to US Department of Justice, the process of community policing promotes the
concept of organisational strategies to support the systematic use of partnership with the
police and the common people to wipe away the social disorder and crime (Dunn et al.,
2016). Local citizen can help the police to identify the particular crime in the locality and
even they can help to identify the criminal groups or individual. Further, the law enforcement
departments are incorporating through social media to gather local information.

Assess the needs of community:
Community policing acts as a guide for the daily operation of the police officers
and they are helping to curb the criminal activity in the local level. A community needs
assessment helps to identify the strength and resources of the community to identify the crime
and they play an essential role to develop the base of the society. The roots of the crime have
been spread all over the society and it should be uprooted from the base (Malik et al., 2014).
Help of the common people will promote this doctrine. The common people are more
accustomed with the criminal process or shelter in the locality compared to the police and
therefore, an amicable collaboration with the police and the common people is helpful in this
regard. Further, this process will reduce the fear and commencement of crime.
Resources:
Work in unity and developed mind is the main resource of the community policing
that helps them to take an active part for the development of the society (Braga & Weisburd,
2015). Additionally, the strong network base also helps them.
Strategy:
Common people could make complaint before the police about a crime and gather
information to help the police. Further, they can identify the epicentre of crime and they
should have to make certain protest against the criminal activities. They can mobilise the
efforts and possessions of the police.
