Introduction
Community profiling of Yishun area in Singapore will allow undertaking social analysis
of the specific geographic features defining the community of people (S t a t i s t i c s S i n g a p o r e ,
2 0 1 8 ) . Gathering information related to a particular community and creating awareness is a
major dimension of community-focused nursing and enables prioritizing or making links to
health in general. Yishun is currently referred to as Nee Soon and is a residential town in
Singapore (Y e w , 2 0 1 8 ) . The current report provides a descriptive analysis of the demography,
potential strengths and weakness with evidence related to the community's health for the
particular area.
Overview of Yishun Area
Yishun is located in the northeastern corner of the North Region, bordering Sembawang
and Simpang in the north, Central Water Catchment in the southwest, Mandai in the west,
Sengkang and Seletar to its east and Ang Mo Kio in the south. The area is named after a
prominent industrialist, who made his fortune from the pineapple and rubber plantation in the
area. The area development was initiated in the year 1976 when the first HDB apartment was
built in Chong Pang area. The development in the area took place partly by part in Yishun, there
are a total of 8 Neighborhood that has been developed and allocated for the construction of HDB
apartments. The area has various shopping malls, leisure areas with religious buildings, medical
facilities and country clubs (N a t i o n a l P o p u l a t i o n a n d T a l e n t D i v i s i o n , S t r a t e g y
G r o u p , P r i m e M i n i s t e r ’ s O f f i c e ) . Other development in this area is also significant and
substantial nature such as educational facilities, parks, garden, transportation and so on. For an
easy commute of passengers, there are mass rapid transport systems also present. At the present
Yishun is referred to as the "Florida" of Singapore due to the prevalence of bizarre incidence in
the region.
Demography of Yishun Area
Yishun is spread across an area of 21.2 km2. Yishun City population map reveals a total
of 210,000 people as of 2017, and 214,940 in 2018 (CITY POPULATION). The population
density of the district is approximately 9,906/km2. It has a slightly higher population as
compared to the rest of Singapore. Most of the population in Yishun is located at its town Centre

and regions surrounding it. The table below reveals the population according to the location of
Yishun. Singapore Department of Statistics provides various details regarding the demographic
characteristics of the Yishun area.

Analysing the population of Yishun area, it has been seen that the population comprises
of 50% male and 50% female participants (i P r o p e r t y . c o m S i n g a p o r e P t e L t d ) . The
graphical representation gives below depicts the number of male and females in Yishun area with
their total numbers.

Demographical analysis of the age group present in Yishun area, reveals that
approximately 73.9% of the people are aged between 15 to 64 years. Amongst this group, the
majority of the population falls either between the 30-39 category or in the 50-59 category.
Middle age representation is the most significant as compared to the elderly and children in the
area.

Strengths and weaknesses of the district
Analysing the demography and historical background of Yishun area reveals several
strengths and weaknesses related to the area (H D B s t a t i s t i c s , f a c t s & f i g u r e s ) . Some of
the strengths of the area are;
 High population density
 Presence of Accessible places of interests within the district
 High connectivity around the district by MRT and bus services
 Family-friendly area for residential and bus service
 Presence of a number of stores, services and restaurants around the place
 Availability of medical facilities
 One of the best residential places to live with HDB flats and condominiums
 Availability of best educational facilities
While the strengths are many, there are only a few weaknesses of the area, they are;
 Posh locality with high priced residential places to live
 Services are expensive and not easily affordable to middle-income group
 Prevalent of the mostly high-income group and very few middle-income groups,
low- income group is almost absent
 Increasing air and water pollution due to various construction work going around
in the area
Strengths and weakness contributing to Yishun Area’s health
Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses, one may easily be able to understand the factors
that contribute to the selected community's health. High air and water pollution in the area makes
it susceptible to a large number of infections and prevalence of high degree of respiratory
ailments amongst adults as well as children (Y a n g , 2 0 1 8 ) . Fast lifestyle and the need to
maintain high socio-economic standards often leads to a sedentary lifestyle which leads to
diseases of various types. Prevalence of a large number of takeaways and eateries in and around
the area makes it easy for residents to avail its services. Often this leads to eating unhealthy and

food with high saturated fats and high salt content. This leads to the prevalence of obesity, Type
II Diabetes, Thyroid, and Cancers of various types.
Conclusion
To conclude, it can be said that Yishun is a posh and developed area in Singapore.
Presence of infrastructure and a broad spectrum of facilities makes the area lucrative to live in.
The Northpoint is the central locus of the area. The area is highly developed and well known for
its facilities and delicious food. Its connectivity with the setup of the new MRT lines allows it to
be connected to other parts of Singapore easily. There is a significant high prevalence in type 1
and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the area. Not only adults but younger generation in the area are
also quite vulnerable towards the disease, given the lifestyle factor in the area. Thus, the public
health problem prevalent due to widespread of diabetes mellitus needs to be discussed in details
along with suitable strategies in nursing that can help overcome the situation in an effective
manner.
